It's been almost four years since I sat in my kitchen, head in hands, wondering where we, as a traditionally liberal nation, had gone so badly wrong.
How could it be that we had failed to listen, to understand, to reach out to people who had become so disenfranchised, so distrustful of Washington. I blamed myself. I blamed us.
Four years later, I realize how wrong I was. In those four years, a significant number of those people have become more entrenched in their attitudes, more openly hateful. And they've done it with permission.
They are spiteful, bigoted, greedy, self entitled, and self obsessed. You could hand them the world on a plate, and they snatch it from you without a word of thanks. Then devour it whole, throw the plate back in your face, and demand more.
In short, they are not merely Trump's hardcore of supporters. They are his soulmates. They voted for him out of spite. They voted for him because they knew he would visit their revenge fantasies upon their imaginary enemies for them. He was their avatar.
A vengeful, spiteful demagogue who, alone, could vindicate the hateful ideology they had been forced to hide for far too long. A man who in many ways, reflected their own failures in life, and as such gave their lives some kind of perverse justification.
They gambled, rightly as history has taught us, that he would give at least tacit permission for them to behave in ways that had long been considered unacceptable.
They care little or nothing for the economy, the environment, civil rights, affordable healtchcare, even public health during a pandemic. They voted for freedom to do as they please, at any cost.
Vote for him once, I can forgive. I won't forget, but I can forgive. Vote for him twice, now that he's shown beyond all shadow of a doubt the monster he is, and I can not, will not, forget or forgive for as long as I draw breath. And if you're reading this, neither must you.
They have wilfully pushed our nation to the ragged edge of dysfunction. I am convinced they stand ready now to answer the dogwhistles of their leader in the days and weeks ahead to further plunge us into chaos.
These people are voting. And because they are, so must you. All elections have consequences.

Do not stay home. Do not imagine that your vote means nothing. Do not vote for a forlorn hope because of your "ideals". Vote to remove Trump. Vote Biden. #VOTE
