Today I will do this. Ed Gien is known as the inspiration for Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface in the Texas chainsaw massacre and More noteably the butcher of Plainfield (a thread) https://twitter.com/cocky_sonny/status/1320860908307075077
Ed Gien was born on August the 27th 1906 (94 years before my birthday) his father George Phillip Gein and Augusta Gien created an unstable house that was plagued by alcoholism and Religious Fanaticism. His father Was a Crippling alcoholic with self worth issues. Something Augusta
, the hardcore religious nut, often took advantage of, she would actively search for “sin and filth” in any place she could calling the city they grew up in (La Crosse) a “haven for Sodimites and Harlems” a message expressed consistently to Ed and his brother Henry
Augusta used to bully her husband and abuse her children physically however, This behaviour led Young Ed to idolise his mother, in 1915 the family moved to Plainfield, Wisconsin. However Augusta top saw Plainfield as just as sinful..
Augusta taught them that women were evil and they “corrupted men and defiled Christ” (yes she was a woman). The only time Ed and Henry were allowed out of her sight was to go to school but they were forbidden from making any friends. Ed Gien however was bullied mercilessly
Which is what very likely lead to Ed’s reclusive nature. On April 1st 1940 eds father, Died of a heart attack, which left the children all alone with their domineering mother. George’s death led to Augusta’s behaviour becoming even more erratic and her fanatical nature increased
She began enforcing to Ed and Henry all women were evil and the entire world was against them. When Henry attempted to escape after he began a forbidden relationship Augusta denounced him. Henry tried to convince Ed to go against Augusta sadly this failed
In 1944 the Family farm was set on fire and the police came to the farm and noted Ed looked agitated and claimed his older brother vanished in the blaze... however his brother was found face down with a blow to the back of the head... however it was claimed he died from...
Smoke inhalation... Ed was never questioned but many historians believe this was the first murder of Ed Gien... although it has never been proven. When Henry’s death reached Augusta she suffered from a large stroke which left her badly disabled... this did not stop her teachings
However on December 29th 1945... Augusta died from a second stroke. And 39 year old Ed reacted by sealing off his mother’s room preserving it exactly how his mother had left it and boarded up all but 2 rooms in his house as he began descending into madness
In 1946 Ed became addicted to Porn and Horror books and Nazi medical experiments by 1947 Ed Gien had snapped he began grave robbing the local cemetery removing hearts, heads, genetiles and intestines. After his arrest he claimed to go here in a daze, having visions but never
Believing that he actually went through with it... it is estimated however he robbed the grave of over 40 women by the 1950’s he would drag these bodies back to his home, practicing taxidermy on them. Gien would occasionally work as a handyman and babysitter to survive
To show his gratitude for his jobs he would send packages of Venison to people... (it is likely it wasn’t venison) it is unlikely we will ever know how many people Ed truly killed as he never admitted it and he has been linked to several murders in Wisconsin.
On 8th December 1954 Gien walked into a Tavern where Mary Hogan worked, Gien shot and killed Hogan Dragging her Corpse into the snow. Loading her on a sledge and taking her back to his farm house. At his house he chopped her up with an axe and turned his body parts into furniture
In 1954 Gien would Saw off the tops of women’s heads and turn their skulls into soup bowls, and stuff their face and hung them on walls like hunting trophy’s. In a box below his bed he kept a box of human noses and Female Vaginas... 2 of these belong to women under 15...
Police found a belt of Human flesh buckled by human nipples and human skin tights and corses and a jacket with a pair of human breasts... on moonlit nights Ed would dance around his garden dressed in these things wearing it along a mask of human skin.
Gien would later tell Police he secretly wanted to be a woman. However forensic investigators believe it seems more likely he wanted to become his mother... his madness cumulated until November 16th 1957 until Bernice Warden was opening her hardware store
And as this happened Gien Stepped inside and shot her dead. With the town empty Gien was able to sneak Bernice to his car... However she would be the final victim. Frank Worden (Bernices son) stopped by his mothers hardware store as a sheriff deputy he was trained in Sleuthing
And knew something was wrong... he immediately thought of Ed Gien (Plainfield’s resident weirdo) as suspicious and he had noticed him lurking around the store earlier. At closing of her store he saw Bernice was missing and saw a trail of blood covering the snow outside...
And in the register of sales was the name Ed Gien... Frank was only going off a hunch and still didn’t expect Ed to realistically be involved in the disappearance of his mother, he was seen as Odd but did not give off any signals indicating he would be nefarious.
Ed Gien was arrested coming out of a “local hardware store” and tried to play confused... and that night in the freezing darkness the police carried out a raid on the Gien Family farm... they first searched the barn. And they found Bernice Wardens corpse...
However it was hanging upside down completely gutted, with its head missing. It had been so badly mutilated the officers at first believed it was the body of an animal... inside the house it only got worse. The house had continued to decay since Augustas death
Bloated Flies covered the entirety of the house on the stove Bernice Wordens heart was sat in a pan waiting for cooking. With several organs littering the freezer. In a paper bag there was the head of Mary Hogan, now a rotting skull. They found mounted heads, skin furniture...
And female bodies chopped and torn apart with blind hate and finally Bernice Wardens head wrapped around in a bloodied sack. With twine hammered into her skull. Gien admitted later he wanted to use it as a decoration.
According to the book Deviant by Harold Schechter Wisconsin police officer Art Schley was so disturbed by what he saw that night he beat Giens head against a wall until he confessed to the murders within months he would be dead of a heart attack
Arts friends claimed that he was killed by the stress of the memories from Ed Giens twisted house of horrors. After Gien was put into custody he remarked calmly he had no idea how many he had killed. Which throws into question the conclusion he killed only 2
The media exacerbated public interest in the case and the house of horrors was seen plastered across magazines. In court Gien pleaded not guilty via Insanity. Something that was quickly agreed by the jury. In Jan 1958 Gien was judged mentally unfit to stand trial
And he was detained in Wisconsin Central state hospital for the criminally insane. This incarceration would last the rest of his life. In this hospital he had the reputation of a mild manner carpenter and was found as polite and even kind...
In November 7th 1968 (10 years after sentencing) Gien was declared mentally competent enough to stand trail and was tried for the murder of Bernice Warden. He was not tried for Mary Hogans death due to financial concerns and it was thought 1 murder conviction would suffice
One week later he was found guilty of 1st degree murder. Gien was found to be insane at the time of Wardens death and was sent back to Central State Hospital. In 1974 he began a petition to be freed creating a media frenzy this was denied.
On July 26th 1984 Gien passed away from Lung Cancer aged 77. In a ironic twist his body was placed in the cemetery that he had robbed so many times... the legend of Ed Gien is a stable of popular culture even some 60-70 years from his murders and the last tweet will show pictures
