Our podcast episode "Hope for When Bible Reading is Burdensome" has turned out to be our fastest and most downloaded episode so far.

Let's think about that for a moment. What kind of pressure are we putting on people with spiritual disciplines?

I think it's important that we recognize, that for many believers, spiritual disciplines have a lot of theological baggage.

When Paul talks about "pressing on toward the goal" it's for knowing Christ. It's not for perfecting our works.

The Word is given. Scripture is heard. 2/
Hang on here, because I believe that reading my Bible for myself is a beautiful thing. But maybe, just maybe, the weight and pressure was never supposed to be on the individual.

Maybe we are supposed to get together and hear the word together, like in Acts.

Maybe it should be spoken over us by someone in our life who knows what we are going through. Maybe it's something that we can do with children on our laps, without creating this perfect ideal.

Maybe we aren't alone in this. Maybe it's not a contest of who can do the most. 4/
For those who feel undisciplined, overworked, unable, and over-burdened--Christ came for you. He didn't come for the perfect. He came for the unable.

There is no status/level any spiritual discipline can gain us that Christ hasn't freely given.
