I'm going to tweet loose translations of the most interesting things from the interview with Iga Świątek's coach Piotr Sierzputowski that I recommended weeks ago.
[THREAD]
On Agnieszka Radwańska:
We like Agnieszka Radwańska and Dawid Celt. Iga is an introvert, she's not as sociable as many think, but when she finds out that Aga and Dawid come for a Grand Slam tournament so that we could hang out together, she's very happy.
On handling social media in Paris:
Iga asked us to tell her when she's congratulated by a big name. You can't ignore Rod Laver or Billie Jean King. You should be thankful to them. Same with Nadal, Federer and Djokovic. They took tennis to a different level.
On the Big 3:
I can see why Iga is a huge fan of Rafa. He's a great guy, well-behaved, who always says hi, winks, smiles at you. He is never rude. Djokovic is very helpful, you can't deny it. Roger is a legend, one can't dislike him, but he can't be liked as much as Rafa.
Roger isn't where all the players are, he disappears. Rafa plays board games with his team, sits with other players and eats the same stuff as others. Roger has his own cook who flies with him. These details make Rafa more likeable, more human, despite being a machine on court.
On the Rus loss in Rome:
Rus was the worst possible opponent at the time. She will never make the Top 30 because she is quite weaponless but she runs a lot and gets plenty of balls back. Iga gets impatient against this kind of players on slow courts.
However, no way she would have lost to Rus in Paris, she'd have won, say 3&1, because in Paris she was more composed.
On losing doubles SF:
I was mad at her for not being there mentally. She was thinking about the singles already. She was to blame for the loss. She was great in the 2nd set only.
On being with Asics:
Nike must be kicking themselves. They were too late to appreciate Iga. Once she decided to quit, Nike made an offer that no other company could make. She'd make more money if she stayed with Nike. But she wanted to feel appreciated so she signed with Asics
Nike didn't want to equip the whole Iga team (they wanted Iga alone). It didn't cost them anything, for Iga it was important. For Nike Iga was one of many.
Now Iga's happy and Asics are over the moon to have their player as a GS champion for the 1st time. Iga is their gem.
On Iga's serve:
I think Iga's serve is average. What is manly about it is the kick. She learnt it when she was injured.
On the potential of her groundstrokes:
Her backhand is the closest to perfection, it's like 90/100 but her scale extends to 130 on backhand
OTOH she won't reach more than 90 on the forehand wing.
