I wrote my opinion piece it today's @globeandmail to think out potential impacts of #Election2020
on Canadian immigration, particularly #asylum. Here's my main points:

1. @realDonaldTrump has gutted US asylum and resettlement systems. His victory would mean their remnants are dismantled.
2. @JustinTrudeau govt's argument on #STCA suspension creating "pull factor" misses the point about refugee rights, but forecasting still warranted.

3. A Trump win will almost definitely spur more asylum in Canada. Keeping STCA in this event would be joining race-to-the-bottom in global asylum regimes.
4. #STCA is moot regardless. Trump has reneged on all manner of responsibility-sharing.

5. A @JoeBiden win will not repair US #asylum and #resettlement systems. More importantly, it won't change perception that Canada is safer than US. "Push / pull models" are insufficient to explain this.

6. #Refugee rights advocates in Canada should admit suspending STCA likely means more asylum claims. People make best decisions for themselves given available options. Asylum seekers are no different.

7. Canada has the public opinion, civil society, institutions, and experience to deal with either scenario.
We don't need to join America's (not to mention Europe, Australia, etc.) race to the bottom to dissuade asylum seekers.
