I can’t overstate how the President’s false attacks on physicians’ integrity, and now his threat to fire Dr. Fauci, are angering physicians, D or R, liberal or conservative. It’s not partisan. It’s personal.
Physicians are putting their own lives on the line to save patients, they struggle to get PPE, they’ve lost colleagues to COVID-19, they’ve gotten sick themselves and are still not fully recovered. They are at the bedside, comforting patients, as distant loved ones say goodbye.
They’ve taken pay cuts. Not drawn salary so as to keep staff on the payroll. Taken out loans to keep their practices afloat. Learned to deliver care by phone. Still facing huge revenue shortfalls. Worried about how long their practices can hang on.
They see many people not wearing masks even as cases skyrocket and hospitalizations and deaths rise. They see politicians defy social distancing. Yet they carry on, because it’s what they do, because it’s their calling, because saving lives is what they do, even at great cost.
As I said, it’s personal for them.
