i don't know start but our culture here in our province is being called out for using blackface but lacks the proper research as to why.
this has nothing to do with cultural appropriating Africans and can be traced back even before Philippine's colonization.
a thread.

ctto Maravilla Z. G. C. and David E. for these keypoints
to begin with, Ati-atihan literally means "to be like Atis" it portrays native Filipinos and not Africans.
Atis are the indigenous people of Panay island. They have dark skin, curly hair, and short in height.

Ati-atihan is a festival (oldest festival according to the records) in the Philippines. Before the Spanish acquisition (1521), there is already an established celebration to commemorate the Aetas from their generosity and hospitality they share with the Borneans.
The Borneans put black ink and colorful accessories to show gratefulness for the warm welcome they received from the Aetas. Contrary to your understanding, the blackface to us was a symbolism of being grateful, a celebration of culture.
It is not true that the clothes used in Ati-atihan are not native.
During the one week celebration of Ati-atihan, there's a day dedicated for the parade of tribes, of native aetas. You have no idea how fun our festival is, unlike other festivals in the PH, we are encouraged to join the parade instead of just stare at the street dance.
I'm putting this on stan twitter because I know how diverse it is here and I have black moots. It's also funny how the person who posted this is a filo when I can see black foreigners having fun during Ati-atihan. Please educate yourself and be open to other cultures.
I have been thinking if I should post this since I know not everyone is open-minded. I hope you do your research first before coming this post. I hope everyone is also aware that these aetas have been fighting for their land, especially the famous white sand beach, Boracay.
pls stop this cancel culture bs and what is Pilipinx btw? anyways i hope you're getting the point here.
lol i posted this thread without proof reading. i have a lot of things to do pa sksksk. dami ko errors pero u get the point naman
There are actually UP students in the comments stating why the page's claim of cultural appropriation is false. LOL as far as I know there are researches that were published in UPV about the festival and Aetas.
Just a heads up, Ati-atihan can be chaotic because everyone's dancing in the street and I think that makes it more fun. There are parades of giants, organized street dances, music festivals, ang daming ganap.
Promoting this bc Ati-atihan's vvv underrated.
Schools along or near the festival route cancels classes for one week because the beat of the drum and the people's chants are too loud.
Anyways, I hope you learned something from this messy thread.
