#TheMandalorian (Season 2)

It's been 3 days, I'm going to start talking about it. I waited but there is still the possibility of: mute the hashtag.
#TheMandalorian OK here we go.đŸ”„

I will keep this pace: I'll wait until Monday to share screenshots. Besides the hashtag, this is a good way to avoid spoilers.

As a reminder, I loved this episode. https://twitter.com/TheSpaceshipper/status/1322190209946177538
#TheMandalorian
I really appreciate that the show embraces its western roots. There is the SW imagery, but its heart, characters and twists are worthy of a typical western. Simple but effective.

Even The Child, despite his popularity, is not the heart of the episode. I love it.
#TheMandalorian
A chapter logically named The Marshal.
Western to the death. But we will come back to it below...
#TheMandalorian
For the ships, it will be quick: there is literally a single shot of the Razor Crest in space 😁

But a nice, classic shot:
#TheMandalorian
A classic, iconic shot for the saga, which also returns to one of the most famous planets:
#TheMandalorian
Here is the original Tatooine mattepainting in Star Wars (1977), then shots from the Mandalorian S1E5 (2019), Return of the Jedi (1983) and The Phantom Menace (1999)
#TheMandalorian
The Razor Crest is then entitled to four aerial shots, aka the time to land at Tatooine. The bounty hunter has reached the next stage of his quest.
#TheMandalorian
That's all for the ship(s).

Fortunately, the artworks are back in the credits. Here for Gor Koresh, voiced by John Leguizamo (Luigi in the Super Mario Bros movie, yes I know he has a long career but he will remain Luigi for me ^^)
#TheMandalorian
Gor Koresh is an Abyssin, a species introduced in the very first movie.

The original one was a little more frightening 😅
#TheMandalorian
John Rosengrant embodies Gor Koresh.

Puppeteer supervisor on Mando, John Rosengrant is the co-founder of Legacy Effects, alumnus of the late Stan Winston and a SFX legend. Before Baby Yoda, you have admired his work for 4 decades. Hello @SWinstonSchool <3
#TheMandalorian
Someone is back and it's great to see this actor. I would not say more (we will undoubtedly have the opportunity for a future chapter), and it was especially to compare the artwork with the result on the screen, as usual.
#TheMandalorian
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that a concept art is used to convey a visual idea, but does not necessarily include the details that one could imagine.
Artists don't necessarily know what costume or weapons the character will have. It's a tool
#TheMandalorian
For example, Boba Fett's costume is different in the series. The artist used old works as a reference here.

(hello Massiff! Introduced in Attack on the Clones, 2002, seen in The Clone Wars)
#TheMandalorian
Other Tatooine inhabitants are back: Scurriers from A New Hope: Special Edition (1997), Pit droids (The Phantom Menace, 1999, already seen last season) and Banthas.
#TheMandalorian
As well as someone who has the same helmet maker as the notorious Constable Zuvio, nearly erased from The Force Awakens (2015).
Just to congratulate #TheMandalorian makeup artists.👏
#TheMandalorian
We already know the members of the Lucasfilm Concept Design Department: Doug Chiang, Ryan Church, Erik Tiemens and Christian Alzmann. Artists who have been working on the aesthetics of this license for a very long time.
#TheMandalorian
However, won't you refuse a short throwback to the past?

Doug Chiang: The Phantom Menace (1999), The Mandalorian (S1, 2019), The Force Awakens (2015, but a ship introduced in Mando) and Attack of the Clones (2002).
#TheMandalorian
Ryan Church: The Mandalorian (S1, 2019), Rogue One (2016) and Attack of the Clones (2002).
#TheMandalorian
Erik Tiemens: Galaxy's Edge (2019), Revenge of the Sith (2005, but ship introduced in The Clone Wars), The Force Awakens (2015) and Attack of the Clones (2002).
#TheMandalorian
Christian Alzmann: Rogue One (2016), The Mandalorian (S1, 2019), The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and The Force Awakens (2015).
#TheMandalorian
And concept model supervisor Rene Garcia? He built a lot of 3D models you know.
#TheMandalorian
The concept team is so talented. And that's just the beginning.

Anton Grandert? The Mandalorian (2019), Battlefront (2015), Battlefront II (2017).
#TheMandalorian
It's time for a break, I don't feel like losing a thread again. See you later. 😎
#TheMandalorian
Back to the Krayt Dragon, a species whose skeleton is visible from the original film. Its fiberglass bones deteriorated in Tunisia for decades.

But first, a really fun fact: https://twitter.com/PhilSzostak/status/1323023614933827584
#TheMandalorian

The Krayt Dragon has left lasting memories for video game players. We often quote KotOR, but this concept art by Cory Allemeier for Bounty Hunter (LucasArts, 2002), a year earlier, looks a lot like the scene from the TV series.
#TheMandalorian
In the Bounty Hunter game:
#TheMandalorian
In Knights of the Old Republic (2003):
#TheMandalorian
In Star Wars Galaxies (2003-2011):
#TheMandalorian
In SW The Old Republic (2011):
#TheMandalorian

I love what they did with it. What a setpiece. Beautifully animated, too.
#TheMandalorian
Krayt Dragon: TV / Artwork
#TheMandalorian

Obviosuly, I love the speeder bike built with a 620C racing engine, the same engine used by Anakin for his custom-built podracer, more than 4 decades sooner.

The wink is so assumed that its introduction is staged to emphasize it. 👏
#TheMandalorian

It's important to recycle, and even more so on Tatooine!
#TheMandalorian
The same Swoop bike (Zephyr-J) from Mando S1E5.

A design that strongly recalls this @TyRuben concept art for Star Wars: special Edition (1997).
#TheMandalorian
Memories for those who played Shadows of the Empire in 1996.
#TheMandalorian
Dash Rendar approves, obviously.
#TheMandalorian
That's not moon, nor a space station anymore.
#TheMandalorian
V-35 Courier, one of the very first SW vehicles.
#TheMandalorian
Mos Pelgo: TV / artwork
#TheMandalorian

It's time for a break again , I don't feel like losing a thread. 😅
I knew it!! Just lost the third part of this thread... đŸ˜±đŸ˜‚
A blackout. Of course, the first of the year. This is The Way.
#TheMandalorian
Too tired to redo 30 tweets today, but I want to finish the Greater krayt dragon.

Yes it's bigger than the bones in the original movie, no it's not a sandworm. We just don't see his feet. Like this; https://twitter.com/eleventhirtyate/status/1323275913497366528
#TheMandalorian
Like this one, but leaner.
We love Terryl Whitlatch, by the way. https://twitter.com/TheRealIanCoe/status/1323276705314865155
#TheMandalorian
We're not done with concept artists yet. See you tomorrow.

Art from SW Uprising (2015) by Brian Matyas:
#TheMandalorian
Damn, @starwars gave the proper credits for the closing credits artworks. Here we go again.

Let's continue with Brian Matyas, a talented character designer:
#TheMandalorian = Brian Matyas X Doug Chiang:
#TheMandalorian
@brianmatyasart made a lot of artworks for the game SW Uprising (2015-2016). I love his art.
#TheMandalorian
After fine-tuning the design of The Child, @CAlzmann 's style is one of the cornerstones of the series aesthetic:
#TheMandalorian
Still Christian Alzmann;
#TheMandalorian
Erik Tiemens!
#TheMandalorian
Doug Chiang:
#TheMandalorian
@rchurchdesign , one of my favorite designer:
#TheMandalorian
Oh Ryan just tweeted about it.
That's the best Swoop! ;) https://twitter.com/rchurchdesign/status/1323325080290521094
#TheMandalorian
And the last one, by @KhangLeDesign

Here with his concept art for ID4: Resurgence (2016) and Rogue One (2016).
#TheMandalorian
One last artist: Tony McVey (Gremlins, Dark Crystal) works on SW since Return of the Jedi (1983).

He sculpted Salacious Crumb (and the Kowakian monkey-lizard for Season 1).

All generations of SW artists work on this series.
#TheMandalorian
End of thread, tomorrow.
#TheMandalorian
Let's finish this thread!

One more thing about the Krayt Dragon: the Pearl is nothing new. Every KotOR player will remember it, but they were introduced in books almost a decade earlier.

(And a little more about the dragon: https://twitter.com/EckhartsLadder/status/1323388777381986304)
#TheMandalorian
Cobb Vanth isn't a new characted, too. He was created by @ChuckWendig

But Timothy Oliphant was a perfect choice. Justified/Deadwood vibes. The funny thing is that Oliphant is currently in Fargo S4, in a policeman role... very different :) https://twitter.com/DelReyStarWars/status/1323298658004205570
#TheMandalorian is @ILMVFX Animation Supervisor on Mando. He worked on Toy Story, Space Cowboys, Pirates of the Caribbean, Rango, Rogue One, The Phantom Menace, Attach of the Clones, Super 8, Pacific Rim, the Mandalorian...
#TheMandalorian

Unfortunately, they usually reveal the secrets of special effects after the broadcast ends. This is why I have nothing to show.

But Hal did show some teeth. 😍 https://twitter.com/halhickel/status/1323437374928429057
#TheMandalorian
Star Wars: Masters of TerÀs KÀsi (LucasArts, 1997) saw several characters clash, including Boba Fett, Jodo Kast (Mandalorian armor), Hoar (Tusken Raider) and Thok (Gamorrean guard). Funny coincidence, or not.

Solo (2018) @JonKasdan script also referred to it.
#TheMandalorian
Let's continuer with the concept artists.

@BenjaminJLast worled on The Batman, Jurassic World 3, Deadpool 2, Hobbs &Shaw and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

His "Orbital Express" original work is a personal favorite.
#TheMandalorian
Working at ILM for more than 3 decades, John Goodson is another industry legend: Ghostbusters 2, BTTF2, Trek 6/7/8/2009, Starship Troopers, Galaxy Quest, Deep Impact, Mission to Mars, SW 1/2/3, Rogue One, Solo... and the Enterprise E & Razor Crest models.
#TheMandalorian
@artbyabc has been immersed in the Star Wars universe for two decades, having worked for LucasArts for a long time and then for animated series (Rebels, Resistance).
#TheMandalorian
Can't forget concept researcher @PhilSzostak - the best account to follow here if you love SW concept design.

He wrote most of the recent "Art of SW" books, and we're waiting his Art of Mandalorian (Season 1 only) for next month.
#TheMandalorian
1/ Scurriers: Art by @TyRuben for SW: Special Edition (1997)
2/ Art by @CAlzmann for Mando S2E1
#TheMandalorian
Scurriers again: https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp/status/1322975366596710400
#TheMandalorian
Another proof than SW is a real space doc: https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp/status/1322975371738943488
#TheMandalorian
Little does Luke know... https://twitter.com/CadBanesBounty/status/1323266159018450947
#TheMandalorian
R5-D4 (still my secret Skippy, a Force-sensitive droid at the heart of the saga. Another proof! 😆)
#TheMandalorian
@jeffzugale did the 3D modeling, mechanical design and 3D printing from the Tatooine Miner soldier helmet concept art.
#TheMandalorian
@WEarlBrown (Preacher, True Detective, Deep Impact) play the Weequay bartender. He was Dan Dority, the barman in Deadwood... where Timothy Olyphant was the Sheriff!
#TheMandalorian
Don't miss the nice thread W. Earl Brown wrote: https://twitter.com/WEarlBrown/status/1322260424851509248
#TheMandalorian
And finally (finally!), I loved how the series takes the Tuskens Raiders to a whole new level. They are no longer one-dimensional and cruel. One culture, one language. To be afraid of what you don't know.

But this development is not the result of chance...
#TheMandalorian

@reallyrenca :"When the team got script, it mentioned sign language. One hearing person on the team knows sign language and that person mentioned that a deaf person should consult the sign language and become the role of being a Tusken Raider."
#TheMandalorian
I think I'm done, and it gave us a good idea of all the love shown by the various participants in this TV series.

I hope that the next episodes will be at the level of this great (re)introduction. I feel like the best is yet to come. 🧐
Reminder: I won't speak and share screenshots about the next episode before next Monday.
And you can still mute the hashtag if you really want / need.
I would also like to highlight the role of Jon Favreau, showrunner of The Mandalorian, who is both the producer, writer and director of this episode.
@halhickel is Animation supervisor, not #TheMandalorian :D https://twitter.com/TheSpaceshipper/status/1323582771617538050
Nov. 9 2012.
Disney had just announced the takeover of Lucasfilm a week earlier.

Jon Favreau: "I am just giddy, first and foremost as a fan, to see what happens with it. I think there is a lot of question marks of how they are going to do it, and..."
"...and who they are going to do it with, and what the story is going to be about; but to say that I am not excited about it is definitely an understatement."

And now he plays with these toys (the Volume/Stagecraft is a wonderful toy/tool).
#TheMandalorian
"Anyway, amongst all the cool new stuff and legacy designs, I was pleased to spot these guys from TFA and Solo in the crowd at the fight."

Jake Lunt Davies is never far from a good alien design. https://twitter.com/JakeLuntDavies/status/1323775739334971392
