September 2020 data from @withmsit showing 9.25 million #5G subscriptions in South Korea, with 591k net adds during the month. @SKtelecom market share still edging up, now 46.1%.
That's a 13.2% subscription share, contributing to 34.2% of cellular traffic (33.6% incl. carrier Wi-Fi offload). Average #5G data use in September was 25.7GB versus 10.0GB for 4G and 9.9GB for market as a whole.
For Q3, #5G use in South Korea was 2.5x higher than 4G use (25.7GB versus 10.4GB). Though much smaller 1.25x gap just looking at unlimited plan users. 4G UNL plans at 28.3GB in Q3 versus 5G UNL plans at 35.5GB.
That trend of heaviest #4G users driving adoption of #5G can be seen in mix and evolution of the share of traffic going to top 1/5/10% of subs. Top 10% of 4G subs account for 56.5% of traffic (falling slightly), while top 10% of 5G subs are 42.3% of traffic (and rising).
Based on those subs and traffic shares, we estimate the top 1% of #5G subs in South Korea average 244GB/month, the next 1-5% average 106GB, and the next 5-10% average 69GB. The remaining 90% of 5G subs average 15GB/month.
