I see a lot of comparison between these two. People say Tariq Lamptey has been better than Reece James, and Chelsea made a mistake selling him.

But is that really true? Let’s walk through their premier league stats this season.

Defending: Most people making comparisons have said Lamptey is better defensively.
Stats show that he makes a lot of interceptions and more ball recoveries but other than that, Reece James is clear. Blocks, tackles, clearances, aerial battles.

Defending: One would think Lamptey having played 89 more minutes would trump this one but it seems not. Lamptey has conceded a penalty.

It is worth noting that Lamptey had a problem getting into the Chelsea side because of his height.

VERDICT: Reece James.

Team play: Chelsea rely on Reece James a lot for width and cross deliveries. RJ has the numbers, Lamptey has a far more superior cross accuracy. Albeit, Lamptey fails in every other aspect and is very untidy in possession, with both short and long passes.

VERDICT: Reece James

Attack: They both have 1G/1A. But it appears Lamptey penetrates the box more as he has won more penalties with his pace and trickery.
Reece has created more chances though. Obviously Reece has played 89 less minutes, and the fact that his goal was a beauty?

VERDICT: Reece James

Eye test: From what I’ve noticed, Lamptey carries the ball farther, attempts more dribbles, win more fouls and penalties, attempts more ground duels.

Stats show RJ comes out better on success rate for most of these stats. But sheer volume is what the eye sees

VERDICT: Lamptey

OVERALL VERDICT: Reece James!

Better in possession, quality over quantity, and most importantly (which is why Lamptey wasn’t given much of a chance) better AERIALLY.

Exactly what Chelsea need from their fullback.

Wouldn’t have hurt to have them both post-Azpi though. #CFC
