If your online conference runs only in one time zone, you charge full price to all attendees (regardless of their time zone) and you charge more than a token amount, you are not increasing inclusivity by running online. 1/n
If, as a workplace, you are not offering leave for online conferences, and work is expected to carry on as normal, please don't expect your employees to get the full benefit of attending the conference, or pretend the conference is meaningful professional development 2/n
I've now attended a few online conferences, and some worked well with good opportunities (and facilitation) for social engagement. Others, not so much. Near-universally, though, my experience has been of jet lag without the airpoints or hotel room due to time zones. 3/4
Long term this might be great for the environment, but unless we get better at it it is unsustainable for individual academics, particularly those with non-work responsibilities. 4/4
