If you just watched the @60minutes story on @LifeCareCenters in Kirkland, there are a few important facts that they didn't share, so I'll do that for them:
. @CMSGov's responsibility as a regulator is to hold nursing homes accountable for keeping nursing home residents safe. Life Care failed to report the outbreak timely & keep its residents safe, & we refuse to apologize for holding Life Care accountable for its failures.
. @CMSGov cannot physically be in every nursing home every day - it is the facility's job to provide the care to residents in a safe way that is sustainable over the long term.
Let's remember that Life Care is not just Kirkland. It is a huge, multibillion dollar corporation w/ tens of thousands of staff. Important question @60Minutes didn't ask is: Why didn't Life Care deploy its massive corporate resources more quickly?
Despite their multibillion dollar footprint, Life Care failed to divert corporate resources toward facilities in crisis like in Kirkland, and are now looking to shift the blame to federal regulators.
Life Care of Kirkland is not a small, mom & pop run business, as it sounded coming from a corporate VP on 60 Minutes. In fact, it's part of a $3.2 billion network of hundreds of nursing homes across the country.
#DYK: Life Care facilities have, on average, higher fines than other American nursing homes. In 2019, Life Care facilities across the country were fined a total of $1.69 million for poor-quality care for residents.
The outbreak in Kirkland represents a clear failure of a massive nursing home corporation to care for individual residents.
. @CMSGov believes residents are more than numbers on a page - they are human beings who deserve dignity and respect, which they didn't get at Life Care of Kirkland.
Tell the truth @60Minutes! @CMSGov spent over an hour w/ 60 Minutes to explain the federal response in Kirkland, yet little of that information was represented in the piece.
