I am frequently blown away by the fact that so few people understand how to motivate people in a workplace setting. I was recently talking to my assistant because she had to call my old assistant from my old firm to get a copy of a filing and my old assistant...
...started asking my new assistant how I was doing and mentioned she missed me. I mentioned to my new assistant I guess I won her over since I was the first attorney to remember her on admin’s day for years.
And my assistant paused and was like- until you no one had ever recognized her or anyone else in the department on admin’s day and no one had at her other jobs either. She hadn’t even known it was a thing.
And I was flabbergasted. And then she told me: I’m really grateful to work under you. It’s the first time I’ve felt like I’ve been able to connect to my boss.
And I’m not the best boss in the world. I curse- I get angry- I forget personal details- I’m demanding- but I do treat others like how I want to be treated and I do try to celebrate a job well done and make sure my team members know they are appreciated.
But that’s all it takes. Respect, appreciation, and rewarding good work.
