Takeaways from this beautiful hour spent w/ @Jess5th, @teachntransform, & a group of teachers trying to best support their students this week – https://twitter.com/liberateNchill/status/1322895367281717251
work on skills: what questions can we ask? where are we getting our information from? can you back up what you're saying? how can you have a productive convo when talking to someone who thinks differently than you?
teaching how to responsibly digest news as it unfolds
we don't want to lose the urgency in this work. this is about so much more than the election. systems of oppression will still exist after its over, no matter the results.
emphasis on SEL - teaching students to take space if they need it, to reach out to someone, to identify what they need, how they're feeling. self-care and more.
we have a tendency to retreat into silence when there's tension. we're afraid to step into discomfort – push against that. acknowledge the tension to ss. think about what can help. be there for yourself, be there for others.
this week, build on what you've ALREADY done, created, worked on with students.
work on creating a "brave space" instead of safe space. a space simply may not be safe for all and you can't guarantee it will be.
reframing "debate" to "inquiry." we are not DEBATING human rights. we are not debating morality.
build in a 2 min mediation to slides & lessons
my notes are sparse because I had a wriggly cranky baby in my lap but this was a lovely hour I'm so happy to have been a part of.
when it was over I immediately joined @teachntransform's Patreon b/c her work is both amazing content & aesthetics. the content is what matters of course but in the DL world...beautiful slides matter too. I knew I needed those slides in my life ASAP. Let's support e/o's labor.
spoiler: skimming through posts and materials and everything is amazing. this work is a gift - thank you @teachntransform, seriously.
