since I guess I'm talking about this again, let's talk about why "death of the artist/separate the art from the artist" doesn't apply to JKR
firstly, this isn't ~merely~ a case of an artist being bigoted in their private life. that's bad enough, of course, and alone worth examination.

this is worse because JKR has deliberately made herself the face of transphobia.
she isn't ~just~ transphobic—she has used her massive platform of millions, of huge power and privilege, of mountains of fame and money—and she's used that to spread toxic, transphobic rhetoric. she's punching down on a vulnerable, marginalized community.
her words have ALREADY been used to justify blocking legislation that would protect trans people.

she's actively spreading her brand of transphobia, validating transphobes to be louder, and creating new transphobic fans.

she is actively making the world more dangerous for us.
secondly, JKR is very much alive and profiting from her work. the books, the movies, the theme parks, the games, the apps, all of it.

you can't separate the art from the artist when the art is giving more power to the artist.
look. POC & Jewish people have been sounding alarm bells for AGES. the racism, the anti-semitism, it was always there in the series. as was the transphobia, the fatphobia—HP is MESSY. let's stop pretending this is some kind of inclusive masterpiece you can't let go b/c it isn't.
I am so tired of seeing queer allies—and even queer people!—make excuses for why they can't give up HP. it means so much to them, it was formative for their childhood, the ~memories~

what the hell do you think this is like for trans fans?
allies, you can't separate the art from the artist. you can't. and when you say you are, you're telling trans people (& every other marginalized community hurt by her work!) that you won't inconvenience yourself to support us. full stop.
and if you won't stand up for us when it means making difficult—even painful—decisions, then why the hell are you calling yourself an ally?

that's not allyship.
I can't emphasize enough how done I am with this. just admit HP is more important to you than trans people and quit justifying the unjustifiable.
