I get exceedingly frustrated when I see folks talking about middle America and Dem-GOP voting. Most people have literally no idea what they are talking about

I was born in CT. But not *that* CT. The *other* CT

My grandparents were farmers. Mother and father started out farming
Both of them escaped it, but barely. Father was a construction worker (non u & union) and mother was a typing teacher (union).

My *entire* Warner side of the family are either farmers, construction workers, or in prison

The other side of my family did better, non are in prison
My brother, sister, & I are the exceptions and we owe that to my mother & sheer dumb luck.

Every single member of my extended family voted Trump in 2016. I get this narrative.

And people who *think* they know do not understand what is happening
The Dems aren’t out of touch with middle America or the working class. Every single program they have designed is *for the working class*!

The problem is 2 fold

1. The GOP lies to them, exceedingly well, in their lang & words
2. Most of these folks want “strong” over “smart”
It’s really that simple.

Every single member of my family would be better of with any of the Dem programs, but they vote against their best interest bc the dems are “weak” “ivory tower” “elite” “pencil necked” “geek” or whatever.
When I was growing up just like everyone around me I “was a republican” bc that just is what you did. I hated dems. I hated the ‘book smart know it alls’ just like everyone else. My father used to rant about some college educated kid with a mechE degree making 2x him. I get this
The problem was the math didn’t add up. Everything the GOP folks *said* sounded exactly what this group needed & wanted to hear, but every *action* they took was literally against this groups best interest. Every. Single. One.

Turns out, the GOP are great at sales and lying
And I mean straight up everything they said was lies.

But it worked *precisely* bc it went to the basic misunderstanding of how to sell to someone in politics: never sell them nuance or complex, sell them simple. Never sell them value, sell them 7 deadly sins.
Here’s the thing, unless you lost your house during a crash, or were hungry for days, or the fear that comes from losing a job, or lost everything bc of a sudden med emergency, you cannot understand how much these folks need what the Dems are selling, even if they don’t know it
And the dems are bad at telling this story and the GOP is great at making the dems the villains in it

And “middle America” and “working class” are not one block of homogenous folks, though generalized to be true, a GOP vote is against their own interests
I won’t touch the subject of religion in this post bc that’s an entire other subject about the GOP, hypocrisy, and religion’s usefulness in keeping folks in voting line.
Let me close this by saying this. I *expect* Trump to lose the popular vote massively. I also, unfortunately, think he’ll win the EC. He sells a primal thing that many folks gravitate too.

Every single Trump voter member of my family is now worse off than in 2016.
But to them it’s *other* people’s fault. He has done what many con artists have done and he seems to have perfected his grift for a very specific segment of the population

What does this mean? My family is in more trouble, unfortunately. They’ll suffer more and more under DT
And that will play *right* into the GOP narrative. They’ll find another villain & serve that up to the voting block & whip them into a frenzy. It will work bc it has worked throughout history

& this is also why the Dems madden me. Get your shit together and tell a better story!
The dems have a better product. In fact, the GOP has *no* product. But the Dems can’t sell shit. They look unorganized, have too many purity tests, and look like some clueless high school troop bc they can’t simply work through their plans.
So Dems, if you win the Senate but lose the WH, this is why. You need better stories. The single best story tellers of this campaign have been republicans in the @ProjectLincoln

The GOP are nothing. They have nothing. Trump is a con-man and grifter and yet they can tell a story
Let me end on a more positive note.

If the Dems do win, and by god for the future of our planet let alone our country, I hope Biden wins...we have a real shot at enacting real lasting positive change for *everyone*. That hasn’t been possible for quite some time
And my hope of hopes for the DEMS is for them to find the fortitude to do that. No playing around, no equivocation, no more purity tests. Actually make the policy changes. Do not try to convince regressives of that change. Just make the change.
And with that, I’m going to leave this with you as someone who deeply understands the plight of folks in this world. If you are one or know one, let them know their best option has always been the Dems, but this time in particular, it’s blue all the way
