I think part of why I get salty about people invoking the Trump/Kovaleski thing is that it exemplifies how hard it can be to articulate ableism as a concept to people. (1)
A lot of abled people aren't really aware of the existence of pervasive, institutional discrimination against disabled people. They think that when we're victimized, it's because people are being *mean* to us.
For the same reason, it bothers me less when people make fun of Greta Thunberg than it does when they suggest it's ipso facto child abuse for her parents to "let" an autistic girl be an activist. The idea that we can't think for ourselves is a far greater threat to us.
Problems without clear-cut bad guys simply don't capture people's imaginations the same way. There's not a supervillain themed after the marriage penalty or institutionalization, so even though these things are appalling, fewer people are appalled by them.
I guess that's about it. Maybe it wasn't worth a "BUCKLE TF UP FOLKS" thread but I didn't feel like I could articulate it in one tweet either.
