Ok I just thought of a better way of explaining this.

Ableds will really think that disabled people are somehow defective ableds until we give away all our medical information to prove to them sufficiently that we're disabled by their own standards. https://twitter.com/twitchyspoonie/status/1322808581104848896
Tw: ableist slur

There's an idea, especially before any disability of mine was readily apparent to ableds with a very narrow idea of what disability is, that I'm just a completely abled person who's "just dumb" or just doesn't do things right. Y'know, just because.
It really wasn't until I not only got my list of diagnoses, but memorized every available medical detail about them and found a way of relaying those details in ways the average abled can understand that anyone respected the fact that I was disabled at all.
And people STILL try to catch me "faking" or quizzing me on all these medical details to try to find an inconsistency to prove that I'm lying. People still think I'm just making excuses for being an inadequate abled person rather than just being disabled.
And THAT'S the attitude y'all need to check. The idea that people are abled until absolutely proven otherwise. The idea that you could never treat an "actual disabled person" like shit bc, you know, you only treat "inadequate ableds" that way.
Ask yourself how you respond to someone behaving in a way you don't understand or being unable to do something when there is no explanation. When maybe someone has gone undiagnosed or doesn't know how to or maybe doesn't even want to explain it to you.
ESPECIALLY when that person is a BIPOC. We're the least likely to get diagnoses because people more readily assume we're just "up to no good" in one way or another. White people get to be disabled and we get to be thugs and criminals.
Combatting your own ableism means treating everyone as if they could possibly disabled until proven otherwise. It means not weaponizing ableism against *anyone*. Disability rights cannot be dependent on us constantly proving we're disabled.
That prioritizes a white supremacist abled gaze. It is not an ok way of defeating these systems.
