Honestly. This sucks. But it is not surprising. At the beginning of the pandemic there was solidarity and the rules made some sense.

Now, whether or not the rules are based on science, they don’t pass the head nod test for a lot of people.

On top of that, folks are just tired. https://twitter.com/AngelaSterritt/status/1322991581897449472
I know multiple people who have been forced back into working full time in an office environment- for jobs that can be done fully remotely - where masks are not even mandated during this new surge.
The science may show that this is safer than gathering with your friends outside. I don’t know. I am not a epidemiologist.

But I am a communicator. And that double standard erodes people’s belief in your message.
If all the restrictions and lecturing is aimed at people, but businesses and workplaces are not expected to do their part to minimize risk where it costs them literally nothing to do so — fewer people are going to take the lecturing and restrictions seriously.
In some cases there may be good reason for a double standard - such as schooling for young children.

But where there is not — there should be an expectation laid equal to that laid on ordinary people in their everyday lives.
Realistically I think we will see less and less compliance if we put all the burden on individuals while allowing employers to expose people to risk for no reason.
