#CLST6 For my #LookCloser7, I examined the ruins of Pompeii via Google Earth. Specifically, I wanted to take a look at one of the landmarks that was discussed in the textbook (2), the baths of Pompeii. Below is an overview of the area that I examined.
First, I took a closer look at the Forum Baths of Pompeii, which are pictured below. As we can see, these baths were located in the middle of a residential area, with two houses, Casa del Poeta Tragico and Casa di Pansa, along with a Thermopolium, a "fast-food" stand, nearby (3)
According to (2), generally, the basilica was crowded in the morning, but Pompeiians would then flock to the baths in the afternoon, which were a few blocks away, as shown below. "At the baths, Romans could enjoy the camaraderie of friends or negotiate business deals" (2)
"The baths provided a pleasant setting for good conversation, physical exercise, and intellectual stimulation." Below shows the separate entrances for the two sexes and the three types of baths: warm (tepidarium), hot (caldarium), and the final cold bath (frigidarium) (2).
