Rather than spending money on hit and miss professional development courses, I've spent the last few years learning from podcasts. I decided to relisten to my favourite 'Don't Tell Me The Score' episodes with @simonmundie every morning last week whilst walking in the rain (1/12)
There is so much to take away from this podcast as a teacher, whether it be for personal development, managing colleagues or supporting students. So with another national lockdown on the horizon, here is a summary of my favourite episodes to help you through this time! (2/12)
Saturday - @JamiePeacock10 and @TheNigelAdkins talk about creating your own core values and measuring yourself against them. Rather than competing against others, simply measure yourself against yourself. None of us are perfect and we need to learn to better ourselves. (3/12)
Sunday - Mike Brearley on leadership. He identifies the importance of thinking clearly when making decions (stepping back), having courage to challenge yourself and others, and the benefits of tough love (being firm and honest with people to help them in the long run). (4/12)
Monday - @HeadStartBook talks about resilience. No event is good or bad in its own right, just how we perceive it. Try and bounce forward following a setback and make it temporary. Recognising and challenging the three P's: personalising, permanance and pervasiveness. (5/12)
Tuesday - @lizsaul1 on morality. Liz has incurable cancer and teaches us that every day matters - never wish away time. Try to focus on what we can do in life rather than what we can't and also to not take our health for granted. This is particularly poignant for now. (6/12)
Wednesday - @SamWalkers on character. In his view, character is more about connectivity than an individual trait. It is also a combination of relentless perseverance and emotional control. He also introduced me to the idea of social loafing - basically being a free rider! (7/12)
Thursday - @thecathbishop on the problems with winning. Competing in Latin actually means striving together rather than against one another. A culture of winning can be misleading in the pursuit of happiness. Be at peace with the idea that we are good enough. (8/12)
Friday - Dr Pippa Grange on fear. Resilience comes from making sense of adversity. If you do struggle with fear, consider the actual consequences of failing - is it enough to stop you doing things in life? Recognise the difference between failing and being a failure. (9/12)
Saturday - James Kerr on legacy. When you feel that you're at the top of your game, change your game (always challenge yourself). Organisations who develop self-discipline shouldn't need rules. Creating a legacy is about adding value to others, not yourself. (10/12)
Sunday - fusion of @lucygoss and @edjackson8 on perspective/self-talk. Manage your time so that you excel in every aspect of life. Experiment with what might be possible to overcome self-limiting beliefs. Balance doing things for others alongside doing things for yourself.(11/12)
I recommend the podcast to everyone - it puts a smile on my face every time. A massive thank you to @simonmundie for hosting the show and offering some of his own thoughtful insights. Long may it continue! (12/12)
