Some Sunday morning post-mortem from UVA loss:
1. It's easy to compare the FSU and UVA games because of disappointing road losses to 1-win teams, but the games really don't compare. Vs. FSU, UNC was flat and FSU punched them in the mouth - for a half. In the 2nd, FSU regressed 1/
Vs. UVA, Hoos kept it up for the entire 60. Credit to UVA because they took UNC's 85-second opening score and responded immediately. FSU loss was more about what UNC didn't do. UVA is more about what Cavs did. 2/
2. Every key UNC mistake was just devastating. Muffed punt, points. Howell fumble, points. Drive-extending penalty, points. Goal line backwards pass, lost points. Inadvertent whistle, lost points. UNC did convert the UVA INT into points, but far fewer Hoo mistakes 3/
3. Defense is a concern and is not trending upward. Lack of depth, injury, and attrition are all factors, but this will need to improve given the back half of the schedule, but special teams are an absolute dumpster fire. Mack may need to look at some in-season changes there 4/
4. Per @awaytoworthy, UNC special teams are 99th of 103 teams in efficiency. In the 2 losses, UNC special teams have 2 missed FG, 2 blocked punts, 1 muffed punt, 1 failure to keep contain on fake kick. Any of those don't happen and outcomes could be different 5/
Looking forward, key is to avoid slip-ups in the next two games. UNC should simply be better than Duke, then will need to play a clean game against a Wake team that doesn't make mistakes. After that is a bye to prepare for ND and Miami. Still a lot of football to be played. 6/6
