There is so much happiness in solidarity. Deep connections built, bonds forged, past grievances dissipated in the cauldron of mutuality. #NoOneGetsFired
But this battle that has been forced upon us comes with so many costs. #CuraPersonalis
We’ve been short with each other and our families. We’ve missed soccer games, and homework assignments. Sometimes the kids put together the puzzle by themselves as we send endless emails or grind through yet another meeting.
We’ve had to neglect things we would otherwise have done. Extra service, research, additional time with our students. We are universally behind on grading.
We’ve worked ourselves to the bone, sometimes to exhaustion, sometimes endangering our health in the midst of a global pandemic.
We do it because we are fighting not just for our jobs, but for our vocations. The very animating spirit which moves us in the world.
We do it because we are motivated by the love of our colleagues, our students, and the fields we study.
Despite the tears, the frustrations, the friction inherent in any collective enterprise, this effort is rooted at its core in compassion and fellow feeling.
And for those driven only by fear, by power, and by the thin, treacly and played-out self-justifications of neoliberal greed, our tenacity must be deeply confusing.
Because we are driven not by our own narrow aspirations, but by our commitments to each other, and that, more than anything else gets us up and fighting again when we think we have nothing left to offer.
And so we are tired, but not tired of fighting. And we will not rest until Marquette University truly embodies and lives its commitment to care of the whole person. #CuraPersonalis #NoOneGetsFired #BLM #FundHSI #FixtheSeal
