Why James harden deserved the 2017’ MVP.

Thread:
Ok let’s start off by showing the records of their teams and some history behind what thats supposed to mean.

Part 1: Record
▫️Rockets: 3rd best record

▫️OKC: 10th best record in the league.

But let’s look at some of the past mvp winners to see what we’re working with.
2020 MVP: best record
2019 MVP: best record
2018 MVP: best record
2017 MVP: 10th best record
2016 MVP: best record in history
2015 MVP: best record
2014 MVP: 2nd best record while having his 2nd star injured.
Now ofc that doesn’t necessarily only means that the mvp shouldn’t be at 10th, but it just shows how the criteria works for most of the time.
Part 2: Box score.

Russell Westbrook: 31-10-10 on 55 TS%

Harden: 29-8-11 on 61 TS%

Both insane, but hardens a little better if you really look at it, I’ll get to the rebounds in a bit.
Part 3: usage and MPG

A common argument is that russ played less minutes, which is true, but also had a way higher usage.

Harden:
36.4 MPG with 34.2 USG%

Russ:
34.6 MPG with 41.7 USG%

So:
Harden - 12.4 MPG with usage.

Russ - 14.4 MPG with usage.
So, harden actually created more points in total with less time with the ball.

Not this could be flawed, but not when taking these 2, since theyre known for only creating with the ball in their hands.
But you know what, let’s play a game, let’s try to adjust Westbrook’s MPG with usage into harden’s statline.

Harden:

33 PPG
13 APG

Now ofc this wouldn’t be the exact same statline, but just to give you an idea of what the high usage means compared to hardens.
Part 4: Rebounds.

Now by looking at the 2 statline’s, the only thing that was giving more attention to one then the other is the triple double, because of the rebounds.

But what were Westbrook’s rebounds?
First of all let’s start by saying that rebounds by guards shouldn’t mean that much regardless, since their uncontested rebounds % is super high.

On Russell Westbrook’s mvp season, 79% of his rebounds were uncontested rebounds, which means 8.4 of his RPG were uncontested.
Now I’m not that guy that shows russ forcing assists or rebounds to get his triple doubles, you can look it out for yourself too.

But, Russell Westbrook had 3 seasons of triple double averges.

In those, Steven Adams took more offensive rebounds then defensive ones. Just sayin.
Part 5: Advanced stats.

Russ led with BPM and VORP.

Harden led with WS/48 and TS%

Russ had an extremely high PER due to rebounds and the fact that PER doesnt account for USG%

Even tho I showed you guys that harden produced more with less usage.
Now Yes this isn’t your typical stat reading thread, because I don’t like to just read numbers, gotta bring context into it.
Both had an historic level seasons, props to russ.

Imma give harden the edge, since in 99% of the time, the most valuable player on one of the top teams always won it too.
