I’d stick with Longstaff no matter what. He’s a serious player and he’ll continue to get better if they don’t revert to Shelvey again.
We’re never going to tear up trees but Newcastle have to find a way to set up an eleven with Hayden and Longstaff included. Both have an awful lot more potential in them, could push on for international recognition and styles compliment each other. Don’t cover same space either.
Longy especially fills the space between deep midfield and forwards which Shelvey just tries to pass across with his Hollywood daftness. Sean gets up there, links, sees a pass and lets his forwards face goal rather than the ball. Let him kick on, Steve eh?
I’d be thinking of throwing his kid into the mix too. Hayden screening a defence, Matty, who can pass as well, snapping at ankles and Sean linking the attack. That gives scope to play Lewis and Murphy as wing backs also. It just looks so obvious, but I’ve been wrong before!
