1/ NEW INVESTIGATION:

Trump’s Dept. of Justice has failed to investigate police departments for racial violence, but has thrown the book at nearly 200 #blacklivesmatter protesters for property damage.

In our latest, we break down the DOJ's campaign to “put down” the movement.
2/ Despite what Trump said about #blacklivesmatter protesters this summer — “These are terrorists. They’re looking to do bad things to our country” — the protests were overwhelmingly peaceful.
3/ According to @crowdcounting’s analysis, no injuries were recorded at all during 97.7% of some 7,500 demonstrations that took place during the first month after George Floyd’s killing.
4/ Yet within roughly two weeks of Floyd's killing, prosecutors from U.S. Attorneys’ offices from Brooklyn to San Diego had charged at least 105 individuals for alleged crimes committed during the first weekend of protests on May 30 and 31.
5/ Among their number was Melquan Barnett.

He is one of at least 340 people in at least 31 states facing federal charges – and potentially lengthy sentences – coming out of the historic wave of Black Lives Matter protests this summer.
6/ Two cases involved murder – with Boogaloo defendants. Only 15 other cases involve allegations of bodily harm.

One former U.S. attorney said many of the other cases are “very small potatoes,” unworthy of federal resources.
7/ The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania charged Melquan with five felonies and a misdemeanor, including arson, rioting, criminal mischief, and risking catastrophe to property, accusing him of setting a small fire inside a coffee shop in Erie, the town where he lives.
8/ Four hours after the state charged him, the federal government took over the case.

Melquan, who pled not guilty, learned the news from his jail cell. "I'm just sitting there thinking man, this is going to get darker and darker."
