Most of our 21stC challenges don’t suit macho solutions, from terrorism to covid to climate change. They’re complex, systemic challenges that need a range of responses. Responses that bring people together, win hearts and minds, create a willingness to act. Together.
In the 21st Century, to lead is to empathise, to engage, to nurture, to compromise, to build coalitions, to work in the open, to not seek to be the cleverest person in the room but to listen to those who are. Masculinity is not set up to face these challenges. But it needs to be.
None of this is new to covid, it’s been a long time coming. The future reveals itself slowly, then suddenly all at once. But it has happened so fast that the 20thC old guard have been caught flat footed and will now have to adapt fast or else impose their power to survive.
