I had a lot of fun sharing my baseball park visits with everyone and hearing all of your stories about the places you've visited. I am going to try it again with hockey venues. The list is a bit smaller (it's 82 venues long), but hopefully just as much fun!
1. Dunkin Donuts Center, Providence, RI. Home of the @AHLBruins, Former home of the Providence Reds. This place was known as the Providence Civic Center back when I first visited back in the 70s. My dad brought me to a Reds game and I was hooked. Been here hundreds of times since
2. Boston Garden, Boston, MA. Former home of the @NHLBruins. Was able to see the legendary home of the Bruins a few times before it was demolished. Lots of people have great memories of this place, but I don't really miss it, maybe because I always had terrible seats. Dirty place
3. HersheyPark Arena. Former home of @TheHersheyBears. Gordie Howe once said "everybody who is anyone in hockey has played in Hershey." Stepping into this place was like stepping into a time machine. Still one of the favorite places at which I've ever seen a game.
4. New Haven Coliseum, New Haven, CT. Former home of the New Haven Knights. Such a strange looking arena from the outside with the circular ramps to the parking garage lining the exterior. Nothing special on the inside, either. The city tore it down and it's now a parking lot.
5. TD Garden, Boston, MA. Home of the @NHLBruins. The original plans called for this arena to be built "just north" of the Boston Garden. Just north ended up being nine inches away. Hard to believe this arena is 25 years old. Biggest plus: Lots of great restaurants in the area
6. Cross Insurance Arena, Portland, ME. Home of the @MarinersOfMaine, former home of the Portland Pirates. Portland is one of my favorite cities to visit. Great food, great sites, tons to do. The hockey arena is solid, not spectacular. Recent renos have really upgraded the place.
7. XL Center, Hartford, CT. Home of the @WolfPackAHL. Sorry Hartford, the NHL is not coming back. Even back when this place was a mall, it was sub-par. The debate over what to do with this money pit Center rages on in Connecticut. This place is way too big for the AHL
8. DCU Center, Worcester, MA. Home of @RailersHC, former home of the Worcester IceCats & Worcester Sharks. Built back in the 80s when touring music acts started skipping Boston due to the age of the Garden. Downtown Worcester used to be a wasteland, but is improving.
9. SNHU Arena, Manchester, NH. Former home of the Manchester Monarchs. When built, this arena was the darling of the minor leagues, drawing capacity crowds. Unfortunately, they didn't last, the Monarchs ended up in the ECHL, which didn't work out. NH fans deserve another chance.
10. Times Union Center, Albany, NY. Former home of the Albany River Rats & Albany Devils. Yet another example of the Devils organization ruining a solid hockey market. Although this building was always too big for minor league hockey, the River Rats did well during their heyday.
11. Webster Bank Arena, Bridgeport, CT. Home of @thesoundtigers. Bright and shiney arena that suffers due to its location. The land it is located on was purchased by the city from Donald Trump for $1 and the forgiveness of unpaid back taxes.
12. Tsongas Arena, Lowell, MA. Home of @RiverHawkHockey, former home of the Lowell Lock Monsters & Devils. One of my personal favorite arenas. Pro hockey didn't work here (thanks again, Devils), but since the arena is owned by UMass-Lowell, it continues as home to the Riverhawks.
13. Wachovia Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA. Former home of the @NHLFlyers and Phantoms. One of the legendary old venues of the 70s and 80s. It was a dark, sticky place, but that was part of its charm. Ingenious move by the Flyers to repurpose as home to their AHL team.
14. Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA. Home of the @NHLFlyers. Huge arena with a great atmosphere and rabid fans. Always a great time when you come here for a game. Access isn't so great for a place right off the highway, but that doesn't detract. Plus, crab fries!
15. Oncenter War Memorial, Syracuse, NY. Home of the @SyracuseCrunch. Lots of places call themselves "Memorial" but this one actually delivers. Check out the display of military uniforms thru the years on the main concourse and the fallen soldiers display upstairs.
16. Giant Center, Hershey, PA. Home of @TheHersheyBears. Hershey hit this one out of the park when they built this replacement to the historic HersheyPark Arena. My favorite AHL arena. I'll overlook the parking situation.
17. Broome County Arena, Binghamton, NY. Home of the @BingDevils & former home to the Binghamton Senators. This unattractive concrete behemoth isn't one of the most attractive arenas you'll find. Due for some much needed renovations. It will be interesting to see what they do.
18. MassMutual Center, Springfield, MA. Home of the @ThunderbirdsAHL & @AIC_Hockey , former home of the Springfield Falcons & Indians. Springfield is an original AHL city that was in danger of being without a team until the T-Birds moved from Portland. Adding AIC has been a plus
19. Prudential Center, Newark, NJ. Home of the @NJDevils. A great arena in a terrible neighborhood. Walk a block in any direction from this place and you will want to turn around. Lots of nice touches inside and great sight lines.
20. Nassau County Coliseum, Uniondale, NY. Home of the @NYIslanders. An arena with an interesting backstory, the Islanders have moved back and forth from their old home several times. The islanders will have one more season here before moving to their new $1.5 billion home.
21. Madison Square Garden, New York, NY. Home of the @Rangers. Can't compete with the downtown Manhattan location, but that makes access and price a couple of serious negatives. Haven't been here in a while, need to revisit as I was underwhelmed by the "world's most famous arena"
22. Mohegan Sun Arena, Wilkes Barre, PA. Home of the @WBSPenguins. This is a decent minor league arena. Located right off the highway, the area around it has built up over the years. A rabid fanbase has made the area a Pens outpost in eastern PA.
23. Boss Arena, Kingston, RI. Home of @URIhockey. URI is the only state college in New England without a varsity program, but their club team has enjoyed much success. Pictured: the Hanson Brothers at Boss Arena.
24. Cool Insuring Arena, Glens Falls, NY. Home of the @ECHLThunder. Former home of the Adirondack Phantoms & Flames. This small, 80s era rink has survived in the professional ranks against all odds thanks to great sight lines and a rabid fan base.
25. Blue Cross Arena, Rochester, NY. Home of @AmerksHockey. A member of the AHL since the 1950s, Rochester is a legendary minor league city. Their home rink is located right downtown with some great sites and restaurants nearby.
26. HSBC Center, Buffalo, NY. Home of the @BuffaloSabres. Buffalo is a seriously underrated city, and the Sabres' home is close to a great many awesome places to visit after the game. It feels a bit dated on the inside, but still a solid place to catch a game.
27. Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, NJ. I've been here for Albany Devils games and the AHL All-Star game. Kind of strange to see this legendary building used for a different purpose.
28. Sun Bank Arena, Trenton, NJ. Former home of the Trenton Titans & Trenton Devils. Here we go again talking about how the Devils ruined a formerly strong minor league market. Trenton used to pack the house during the first go-around of the Titans. I only got to see empty houses
29. Santander Arena, Reading, PA. Home of the @ReadingRoyals. Feels like the Royals have been around forever, especially when you look at the rest of the ECHL. Downtown Reading, where the arena is located, has a bad repuation. The arena itself was a solid place to catch a game.
30. Verizon Arena, Washington, DC. Home of the @capitals. This arena has a great location right on top of a subway station. Great neighborhood, right near all the sites of DC, but this has never been one of my favorite arenas.
31. PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA. Home of the @penguins. People in Pittsburgh like to wax poetic about the Igloo, but this is one of my favorite NHL Arenas. Feels like a lot of Pens fans are bandwagony, but Pittsburgh is another one of those underrated cities to visit.
32. Meehan Arena, Providence, RI. Home of @BrownUniversity hockey. This classic dome is always a chilly place to catch a game, so bundle up. Evidence in how college hockey has grown is evidenced by the fact that the Frozen Four was once played here.
33. Schneider Arena, Providence, RI. Home of @FriarsHockey. The Friars moved on-campus in the 70s when the basketball team moved off campus with the building of the Providence Civic Center. Recent renovations have significantly modernized this sleepy old rink.
34. The Scope, Norfolk, VA. Home of the @NorfolkAdmirals. Architecturally interesting from the outside, close to downtown Norfolk, this is a solid place for a road trip. Haven't been here since the Admirals moved down to the ECHL.
35. Bright-Landry Center, Brighton, MA. Home of @harvardcrimson hockey. When discussing Boston's college hockey rinks, this one often gets left behind, but this rink boasts the 1980 Olympic team as participants in its first game. Recent renos have improved the gameday experience.
36. Mullins Center, Amherst, MA. Home of @UMassHockey. This on campus arena is a really nice place to catch a game, but doesn't seem to draw the fans like it should. The team is becoming more competitive, which should help.
37. Androscoggin Bank Colisee, Lewiston, ME. Former home of the Portland Pirates. The Colisee stepped in for one season while the CCCC was undergoing construction. This arena is most well-know as the site of the Ali-Liston fight, which produced one of sport's most famous photos.
38. Ingalls Rink, New Haven, CT. Home of @Yale hockey. The "Yale Whale" is perhaps the most interesting looking hockey rink you'll ever find. Built to look like a skate and convey motion, the undulating roof is matched by a similar design of the seating bowl.
39. Freitas Ice Arena, Storrs, CT. Former home of @UConnHuskies hockey. The Men's hockey team moved to Hartford when they joined Hockey East, but this tiny rink is still being used by the women's team.
40. Lawler Arena, North Andover, MA. Home of @Merrimack hockey. Merrimack is the smallest school in Hockey East, with an enrollment that could fit entirely within tiny Lawler Arena. This cozy rink gives the Warriors a great home ice advantage.
41. Hart Center, Worcester, MA. Home of @HCrossMHockey . This on-campus arena shares a concourse with the school's basketball arena, but seems to have been an afterthought to the design. Metal bleachers are on the opposite side from the entrance. It's cold and cozy here.
42. Ryan Arena, Watertown, MA. Former home of @BentleyHockey. This community rink was a substandard home for a Division One team. Luckily, the school also realized this and built a beautiful new on-campus rink for their hockey teams (more on that later).
43. Milford Ice Palace, Milford, CT. Former home of @SHUHockey. Another case where a Division One team was playing in a community rink. The Pioneers have moved to bigger and better things at Webster Bank Arena.
44. Olympia Ice Center, West Springfield, MA. Former home to @AIC_Hockey. For a while teams in the AHA really roughed it in terms of facilities. AIC played in this community rink that is an impressive complex, but not fit for a D-I program. They now play at the Mass Mutual Center
45. First Arena, Elmira, NY. Former home of the Elmira Jackals. I was really surprised by how nice this smaller arena far off the beaten track was. I also remember how hard it rained. I never did dry off. Sadly the ECHL has moved on from Elmira.
46. Utica Memorial Coliseum, Utica, NY. Home of the @UticaComets. The AHL moved back to this cozy arena and the Utica fans have responded with packed houses night after night. Can't beat the atmosphere in this place.
47. Alfond Arena, Orono, ME. Home of @UMaine hockey. Back in the day this place was one intimidating places in all of college hockey. With the recent struggles of the Black Bears, it's not so full, but still a great place to watch a college hockey game.
48. PPL Center, Allentown, PA. Home of the @LVPhantoms. The most expensive minor league hockey rink ever built, this place features an atypical design (hello all luxury boxes on the same side and all the seats on the other). Movement issues aside, it's a great place to see a game
49. Thompson Arena, Hanover, NH. Home of @dartmouth hockey. Designed by famed architect Pier Luigi Nervi, this concrete building is more attractive than you would think. For the best Big Green experience, come when Princeton is in town.
50. Matthews Arena, Boston, MA. Home of @GoNUathletics hockey. This is the oldest indoor arena still in use in the world. How many rinks can claim that they are the first home to 2 NHL franchises? This grand old place can. New stuff, such as the HUGE scoreboard, seem out of place
51. Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA. Home of the 2016 Winter Classic. The event was great, too bad the Bruins forgot to show up for this one. Of the three Winter Classics I've been to, the least memorable.
52. Walter Brown Arena, Boston, MA. Home of @BUAthletics women's hockey. This is one of the only college rinks in the country used solely for a women's program. It stands about where the left field pavilion once stood at Braves Field.
Agganis Arena, Boston, MA. Home of @BUAthletics men's hockey. Named for the legendary Boston University alumnus who played for the Red Sox, this may be the premier college hockey venue in the northeast.
54. Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY. Former home of the @NYIslanders. Moving off the island to Brooklyn was a disaster (technically BKN is still on the island, I know). The arena was not suited to hockey, the suburban fans hated coming into the city. The team is back in the 'burbs
55. Whittemore Center, Durham, NH. Home of @UNHWildcats hockey. There's something about New Hampshire and concrete hockey arenas. Whittemore center boasts an oversized ice surface and some fun traditions (like throwing a fish on the ice after the first UNH goal).
56. Danbury Ice Arena, Danbury, CT. Home of the @DanburyHatTrick & @CTWhale_NWHL, former home of the Danbury Whalers. There may be no arena anywhere with a more colorful story than this one (if you're not aware of the backstory, do yourself a favor and look it up).
57. People's United Center, Hamden, CT. Home of @Quinnipiac hockey. A nicely designed twin arena, pucks on one side, hoops on the other with a shared concourse. This small school made a huge impression with a pair of Frozen Four appearances in 2013 & 2016.
58. Messa Rink, Schenectady, NY. Home of @UnionCollege hockey. Here's a "cozy" on-campus rink that works perfectly for this small school that won an NCAA title in 2014. Beware, the bleachers in the upper reaches of the dome can be tough to get to.
59. Houston Field House, Troy, NY. Home of @rpi hockey. This arena was originally a hangar in Rhode Island and was dismantled and reassembled in Troy for the university. Extra points for the school's mascot, the original "PuckMan."
60. Tate Rink, West Point, NY. Home of @ArmyWP_Hockey. There's not a whole lot to write home about with this rink, but it's always a cool experience to catch a game here at West Point.
61. Warrior Ice Arena, Brighton, MA. Home of @TheBostonPride. Also the practice facility of the @NHLBruins. I get the best seat in the house to see the best team in the NWHL every game. There's a rapidly developing neighborhood around this place. Worth a visit.
62. Northford Ice Arena, Northford, CT. Former home of the @CTWhale_NWHL. The Whales have been nomadic throughout their existence, with four different homes in six seasons. They called this community rink home during the 2016-2017 season.
63. Notre Dame Arena, Berlin, NH. Former home of the Berlin River Drivers. This couldn't be further from the Notre Dame you're thinking of. In the tiny town of Berlin, NH, not far from the Canadian border is this tiny community rink. The Federal League set up shop here for 1 year
64. Hobey Baker Rink, Princeton, NJ. Home of @Princeton hockey. Another classic old barn. We were standing right outside the place and couldn't find it. It's that unassuming. You'd never know there's been hockey played here for around a century.
65. Nationwide Arena, Columbus, OH. Home of the @BlueJacketsNHL. Cool arena in the entertainment district of Ohio's capital city. Its defining feature is the cannon which shoots off after every Blue Jacket goal.
66. Little Caesar's Arena, Detroit, MI. Home of the @DetroitRedWings. Detroit entered the arena arms race in a big way with this brand new facility. Combining every modern technology available with some old-school aesthetics, I should have liked this arena more than I did.
67. Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, OH. Home of @monstershockey. It's tough being a minor league team in a major league facility, but the Monsters make a solid go of things in Cleveland. It certainly doesn't hurt to be located in the arena neighborhood here downtown.
68. WesBanco Arena, Wheeling, WV. Home of the @WheelingNailers. This arena was much more than I expected after seeing Wheeling's downtown. The interior gives off a serious 80s vibe with the color scheme. The displays of local athletes, including John Havlicek, is outstanding.
69. Pegula Ice Arena, State College, PA. Home of @penn_state hockey. We had the misfortune of attending here during a sold out Notre Dame game. The place has standing room available for maybe 50 people, yet they sold at least 5 times that many. We didn't see much.
70. Bentley Arena, Waltham, MA. Home of @BentleyHockey. This nice on-campus arena took the place of the sub-par Ryan Arena, which was located a town away. It was designed to be energy efficient and sustainable. We were lucky to be there for opening weekend.
71. Lawrence Larsen Rink, Winthrop, MA. Former home of the Boston Blades. Located in the hometown of the 1980 Olympic team captain, there is a display in the lobby featuring some great Mike Eruzione memorabilia. The CWHL's Blades called this rink home in 2017-18.
72. Huntington Center, Toledo, OH. Home of the @ToledoWalleye. Very impressive ECHL facility located downtown. Great food selection in the arena and very affordable. Bonus points for featuring merchendise from the Goaldiggers, possibly the best pro team nickname ever.
73. Wings Event Center, Kalamazoo, MI. Home of the @KalamazooWings. Like a time machine from the 70s, this arena is a fantastic relic from another era. I imagine that if you move the championship banners hanging on the back walls there would be cigarette smoke stains there.
74. Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids, MI. Home of @griffinshockey. Great location downtown. We were lucky enough to be there for the annual New Year's Eve game, a big event here. Unfortunately, it does bring out a lot of non-fans to gum up the experience. Great craft beer scene here
75. Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, IN. Home of the 2019 Winter Classic. A great setting for this annual event, which went well for the visiting Jesus. My re-christening of Touchdown Jesus as "Goal-Celly Jesus" didn't stick.
76. AllState Arena, Chicago, IL. Home of the @Chicago_Wolves. Located out by O'Hare Airport, this 80s era barn may be more known for its pyrotechnic-filled intros than anything else. Love the different styles of barns in the AHL. The ticket booths are across the street-weird
77. Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Arena, Worcester, MA. Former Home of the Worcester Blades. The Blades of the CWHL played one season here before the league folded. The Blades were 0-28-0 with a negative 133 goal differential. They only scored 22 goals all season.
78. Indiana Farmers Coliseum, Indianapolis, IN. Home of the @IndyFuel. Another ECHL that's a bit outside of the mold. The Coliseum has been in use since 1939. Virtually every Indianapolis hockey team ever has used the rink. Even the Pacers used it during their ABA days.
79. Gutterson Fieldhouse, Burlington, VT. Home of @uvmvermont hockey. In use since 1963, it feels infinitely older. There were plans to replace Gutterson and the basketball gym, but opposition to a new ice rink was so strong the school will just replace the gym.
80. Toyota Arena, Ontario, CA. Home of the @ontarioreign. Part of the AHL's great western migration of 2015, this is an impressive newer arena, although without a lot of character. Hard for this New Englander to be able to go to a game in January while wearing shorts.
81. Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA. Home of the @LAKings. We were at the game right after Kobe Bryant's death, so hard to judge the atmosphere. The outpouring of grief on this day was simply indescribable. It's a very nice facility, though, but middle of the NHL pack for me.
82. Honda Center, Anaheim, CA. Home of the @AnaheimDucks. Our last new venue before everything shut down. Nice arena, not much of an immediate neighborhood, even with the ballpark and Disneyland nearby. Palm trees outside the arena just do not scream "hockey."
So that ends my listing of all 82 hockey rinks I've seen a pro or college game at. Hope you've enjoyed it. I love reading all your comments, keep them coming! Thanks for reading. For more in-depth looks at all these venues, check out http://www.stadiumjourney.com
There is one more rink I've visited-Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY. I was at these Olympics in 1980, but my non-sports loving father wouldn't splurge for hockey tickets. We saw free speed skating & ski jumping instead. Do you believe in miracles?
