Dear America,

Your Veterans Day is our Remembrance Day, but we know there’s a lot going on right now. And we know it’s important.

You might not see our fuzzy red flowers. You might not wear them.

But if you see them, please know why.
Please know who.

Yours,

@CAFinUS
When the war started, you left your job as a barber in Maine to enlist in Canada.

On a September day in France, you risked your life to save your wounded brother in No Man’s Land.

They gave you the Victoria Cross.
We still say your name.

William Henry Metcalf is Us.
They wouldn’t accept you in Canadian nursing schools because you were Mohawk.

You had to study in the United States.
You graduated top of your class and headed to the frontlines with the U.S. Army.

Remember the rejection.
Remember her persistence.

Remember Edith Monture.
From your home in Detroit, you had to cross the lake to Canada to earn your wings with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

You returned to join the Tuskegee Airmen. A Red Tail forever.

We remember your fight.
We remember, Claude Rowe.
When the Great War began, he went north to Canada to join the Army.

On a September day in France, he ran straight into enemy fire to provide medical care to injured soldiers.

He put their lives before his own.
Son of Illinois. Forever Us.

Remember Captain Bellenden Hutcheson.
We still see you resting in France.

“Mother, if I should come up missing, don’t start worrying for at least six months, as I might pop up somewhere.”

Sadie’s son never popped up, never returned home to Asheville, North Carolina.

America’s son. Forever us.

Flight Sergeant Claude Love, 1918-1942
“Because he was American citizen, he would not have been sent overseas except by his own request.”

He chose to fight for Canada.
He chose to risk his life.

We see you, Claude.

Who do we remember each November?

They saw the news on 9/11. They knew.
Twenty-five of the many in Afghanistan.
The many who never really left.

We still think about you.
We still talk about you.

We still love you. https://twitter.com/JCStadnyk/status/1326504702712934400
