When you use the 2% what surgeries are you talking about? How can we ever expect change if there are no clear definitions. The overwhelming majority of surgeries are for hypospadias repair - are you saying that anyone with hypospadias is intersex? #hypospadias #intersex https://twitter.com/briandavidearp/status/1322324122798592000
Should we also not be discussing an evidence based approach & ensuring ‘do no harm’?
There’s a definite lack of evidence for many of these surgeries & also significant possibility of harm - but they have nothing to do with trying to assign a sex, but more to do with normalising appearance - can we not have a bit of honesty & integrity about how this is discussed
At present, we are in a situation where hospitals can claim to be stopping ‘intersex’ surgeries, whilst carrying on as normal & just claiming that the surgeries they are currently doing have nothing to do with intersex - & the real needs of people with VSDs continue to go unmet
The only winners here, seem to be groups getting grants & funding for projects that rarely have any relevance to the lives of those of us born with variations of sex development - & still no funding for a non-surgical pathway of psychological & family support
