"the complexities of kambe daisuke" -- an essay by akie

kambe daisuke opened the show "fugou keiji balance: unlimited" with a monologue, giving the viewers a glimpse on what could've happened to him and what his motives might be.
as the series progresses, the viewers see more and more of who is and what kind of life he lives.

• kambe daisuke is wealthy.

the kambe family owns a conglomerate, one of which is a research institute. his parents, shigemaru and sayuri, were researchers. the kambes
discovered an element called adollium, an immensely powerful element that is beneficial the same time it is destructive. up until the last episode, the kambes kept a firm hold of this knowledge and profited from it for years.
• kambe daisuke uses his money to solve cases

he does. that is indisputable. but not once has it been shown that he used money for personal use. he used his money to (to name a few):
▪︎open a drawbridge that hasn't been drawn since the 70's to drop a van containing a bomb
▪︎ paid for damages double its market price
▪︎ bought a tower that is being used as an event's place for a drug party

and most importantly:
▪︎ for environmental clean-up operations, as well as payment for the affected fishermen
• kambe daisuke is not an asshole.

daisuke shows concern to the people around him and it has been proven that he's been observing them. this point is most evident in episode 3 and episode 10:

▪︎ episode 3 - he put great faith in haru's words when haru said
the boy in the train is not someone who kills people. he also paid for the hospitalization of the boy's sister.
▪︎ episode 10 - he knows of haru's internal struggle of being a hero and a civil servant, a thought haru mentioned in passing in episode 4 while they
were both drunk. daisuke also arrested "shigemaru" for the murder of cho-san and takei, not mentioning his own mother, because those two men are important to haru.

additionally, when haru asked daisuke if he wanted to exact revenge against his father, the only
thing daisuke said was he "wanted answers". not revenge.

daisuke came off as asshole in the first two episodes because we, as viewers, are seeing it through haru's eyes. at that point, they were still strangers. they did not trust each other yet. they were not buddies.
haru did not know daisuke's motives, and it's why he appeared cold and aloof.

we should not ignore the fact that daisuke had a traumatic past, seeing his mother dead and his father holding the knife. he was lied to by his grandmother, his guardian, for years.
he basically lost his family as early as eight years old. we did not know what happened from there on, but we can presume that, as daisuke said, his life was "hollow and boring" until suzue mailed those sunglasses.

i do not want to comment on
how this could have affected him psychologically because i am not knowledgeable and i might say the wrong things. but i think it is not far-fetched to say the events 19 years ago did affect him mentally.
in conclusion: kambe daisuke is a complex character and is much more than the "rich and handsome" character we know.
