My contribution: I know an elderly couple; Russian immigrants. Poor language & tech skills. Don’t know their politics. They called me up; didn’t receive their mail in ballots. This begins before halftime of M-MSU FB game. (1/n)
I was destined not to be able to watch that game (serendipitous blessing), nor the Louisville-VaTech game which followed - UofL being my undergrad school. Anyway, go online. Couldn’t find what I needed. Called up Vote Hot line. I had all their info, DOB, SS & DL #s, etc. (2/n)
Help guy says he will call them, if I first call to introduce him. 5 min later, couple calls me back, says help guy wants to talk to me. Long conversation; takes me through web labyrinth of downloading/printing official duplicate ballots + attestation/signature pages, etc.(3/n)
So I do it. Only printer runs out of toner during first batch of 14 pages. I drive to work, only to have my printer there also run out of toner. Go back home. Call Staples. They have toner. Drive to Staples. Turns out they don’t have it. So, Sunday I’ve got to locate toner (4/n)
Print out ballots & attestations. Take them to couple (way across town). Come back later to pick up ballots. Deliver to vote center. & I don’t even know if they’ll be voting for my candidate. Moral is voting can be complicated for elderly infirm non tech savvy Eng 2nd lang (5/n)
& this is in CA, which tries to make it easy. People don’t understand how need to request/justify mail ins, restricted polling places& hours, need for signature witness/notary, envelopes inside of envelopes, voter ID laws etc really does suppress votes. Or maybe they do know(6/6)
