In 1956, Manbhum District was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Re-originated Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act, 1956 and the present district Purulia was born on 1st Nov., 1956. +
Long before the Bhasha Andolan Movement took shape in East Pakistan, the first ever longest linguistic movement for Bangla language was initiated in Manbhum district (1940s to mid 1950s) against forcible imposition of Hindi which led to the formation of Purulia.
After Independence, Manbhum was conceded to Bihar. All the Bengali officers were transferred to the districts of Bihar. Orders were issued to teach Hindi from primary classes. The Bengali department of the zila schools was closed.
It became mandatory for the Bengalis of Manbhum district to show Domicile Certificate. Hindi was declared as the official language of the Manbhum district. This led to a severe uproar to include Bengali as the language of Manbhum district and inclusion of Manbhum in Bengal.
The Congress Party president, Atul Chandra Ghosh and secretary Bivuti Bhushan Dasgupta along with 35 members resigned from party at Manbhum district and formed  Lok Sevak Sangha on 14th June, 1948, at Pakbirra village to fight for Bengali language and to protest against the +
+ forcible imposition of Hindi on the Bangla-speaking people as a state policy. This linguistic-agitation was the first of its kind in India. The then-Bihar state government unleashed a reign of repression and torture. Rallies were banned and protesters were put behind bars.
Lok Seva Sangh changed its strategy and started a three pong agitation including Satyagrah Andolan (1949-51), Hal Jol Andolan and Tusu Satyagrah Andolan (January 9 to February 8, 1954).
Thousands of Bengalis people of Manbhum district with the song 'Shun Bihari-Bhai/Tora rakhte larbi/Dang dekhai...( O Bihari-Brothers/You cannot keep us in Bihar/We are showing you sticks..) went to the jail. This song was written by Bhajahari Mahato.
The freedom fighters of the Manbhum movement :

>Labanya Prabha Ghosh- the 'Manbhum Janani' who was married to Atul Chandra Ghosh.
> Arun Chandra Ghosh- the eldest son of Atul Chandra Ghosh and Prabha Ghosh.
