There’s many different reasons why people are passionate about reforming drug law, in particular the recent cannabis legislation. That the law has come so near and yet so far from passing has caused huge frustration, possibly equal to the passion some felt when campaigning
I’m passionate about this legislation for several reasons, this is the most sensational:

A couple of yrs ago gang affiliated dealers moved into the house in front of me, we have shared driveway. Neighbours, friends and I all quickly realised what was happening
We started complaining to police, we complained nearly daily for 8mths before police took any notice

Months of intimidation, people coming and going all hours of day and night, staring down my visitors, blocking the driveway, parking on my property when it suited them
They installed security lights that shone into mine and neighbouring properties and installed cameras that watched every time I came and went

They let dogs roam and shit on my property, they held parties on driveway that I had to walk through to get my mail or take out bins
They wrecked stolen cars in garage and had a pile of *spare* number plates for several cars they regularly swapped out, and sold other stolen property on TM

Smells from garage that formed a boundary with me added to my fears, petrol and sump oil was spilled in my garden
They came on my property at night, and told me that they would be doing this whenever they felt a need

Landlady lived in same street drove by everyday and didn’t notice anything. She eventually moved to Aus. I didn’t trust her to not put me in a worse position if I mentioned it
After 8 mths of reporting this to police, tenant’s ex on a 3 day bender drove onto my property at speed, slammed on brakes and stormed off to abuse tenant, leaving dog in car and blocking me in

I called 111 and reported it as a domestic, he was smashing her against the wall
The attending police officer saw with his own eyes that this guy was “off his face” (official police terminology, he actually said this to me)

I had been terrified for my life, not sleeping, high anxiety and finally something happened that police couldn’t ignore
It took another two months before undercover cop was invited into their house where all kinds of drugs were displayed on dining table. There were young children in the house

They were selling cannabis, Ecstasy, everything. They were encouraging upgrading to P
I live on a leafy street in a middle class area. This is the type of neighbourhood they prefer

It happened to me, and all the very ordinary people who live around me

This can happen to you and to the people you love
When I hear people say “I should grow up” because I’m cross the legislation didn’t pass it’s telling me my passion is unwarranted and unworthy

When I’m told “really this has nothing to do with Ardern” I wonder why she has nothing to do with me and my neighbour’s safety
When I hear people complaining about the Greens “losing their shit about this”, well, drug dealers moving in next door to me had nothing to do with how I vote
Those who voted no - this issue affects all of us

And it didn’t go away on the strength of your no vote

The drug dealers are emboldened by the no vote, they campaigned for it as strongly as you did like any business person would

And they won, thanks to your support
People can have different opinions about whether or not Labour should’ve supported the referendum

They are just different opinions, people come from different perspectives

I’m telling my story to illustrate my perspective

And to encourage tolerance
