20 years of the most groundbreaking album in the history of southern hip hop.
20 years of the album that proved once again that southern hip hop is more than what you knew.
20 years of the album that changed the game forever.

20 years of Stankonia: A THREAD #Stankonia20
5 years before Stankonia, OutKast stood in front of the Hip Hop industry and told everyone that “the south got something to say”.

As time went on their voices grew louder and with the release of Stankonia their voices were heard over anyone else’s.
When OutKast came home from touring for their classic album ‘Aquemini’, they discovered the studio they recorded all of their work in was being foreclosed.

The duo purchased the studio, named it Stankonia (stank on ya), and worked on an album named after the studio.
Stankonia wasn’t only the name of their studio, it represented their own land. A land that’s located at the center of the earth, separate from America and what it was.

Stankonia, the place from which all funky things come...
OutKast had so much creative freedom while working on Stankonia which heavily influenced the album’s unique sound. While having so much freedom, they also knew this was a followup to the heavily acclaimed ‘Aquemini’. They were free but VERY careful with their process.
OutKast was influenced by numerous funk and soul artists while working on Stankonia. They aimed to blow minds, so they took after the artists that blew minds before them. Artists like Prince, Jimi Hendrix, George Clinton, and James Brown were the main inspirations for the sound.
One of the things that made Stankonia so special is that the album was a group effort. The entire Dungeon Family was involved and added their own ideas.

They didn’t only give their own team the spotlight, but they introduced legendary rapper Killer Mike to the world as well.
Stankonia is more than just hip hop, it was simply art without any exact definition. They created their own dimension with this album and each song has its own identity.
Stankonia turned personal songs (Ms. Jackson) into smash hits, empowering anthems (B.O.B) into upbeat songs, and feminist messages (We Luv Deez Hoes) into southern rap classics.

Hip Hop had never seen anything like it.
OutKast didn’t only create their own world musically, but they made sure their music videos portrayed a alternate reality as well.

They gathered everyone in the hood to join them on their own planet in B.O.B and made animals vibe to the music in Ms. Jackson.
While Andre 3000 grew bored of Hip Hop at the time, Big Boi fell in love all over again. The album is his ultimate vision for OutKast. This lead to some of his greatest performances.

Big Boi will go on to spend his entire career recreating Stankonia.
Many say that without Stankonia many Hip Hop artists wouldn’t have the encouragement to fully express themselves and I agree. This album cemented OutKast in history books. Hip Hop will celebrate this classic each day to come.
