The marathon begins! First up, Night of The Living Dead!
Interesting to note that one of the first comments Johnny makes is that he doesn't remember the man whose grave they're visiting (presumably his father)
Also his extended comments on the meaninglessness of ritual related to remembrance of the dead.
I love the first shots of the zombie wandering around as he goes through his "they're coming to get you" schtick. Excellent irony lol
I also love the walk up the staircase shot and then she sees the face of corpse up there. Chef's kiss
I think part of what I love about this movie is that our launches straight into things and refuses to explain, leaving you feeling just like Barbara.
Also, how the house becomes sort of its own, onnipresent character.
I think the way it establishes a familiarity with the viewer contributes to that feel of a besieged safe haven. Just as it feels safe, it is attacked again, etc.
it's also really interesting how thev trilogy ends up playing with decomposition. Obviously initially due to budget and tech, but Night's zombies all seem like they must be recently dead to the point that they still think strategically/use tools.
Something I was thinking about while watching Kingdom laat night is how all good zombie movies depict social orders and constructs collapsing, and the manifests in different ways and metaphors throughout the movies.
In Night of the Living Dead, you have a black man and a white woman taking over the house of a stranger and literally breaking it down to fortify it, to keep themselves safe from mindless hordes. HRMMMMMM
Zombies are scary not only because they are a personified memento mori, but because they refuse to be related to in human ways. They don't speak or listen or feel anything. They underline that death is beyond the limit of human understanding.
Also an important thread in the story Barbara tells about being attacked in the graveyard, the details evoking a sexual assault, and the man's response being to try to get her to stop talking about it.
