to become a comics professional all you have to do is realize you are one and start acting like one

this seems like a burn but I’m serious!
walk into interactions with pros as “we are equals.” If you don’t work with publishers, you’re a “self pub guy“ or equivalent. Indie. Webcomics. It’s all pro work even if you’re doing it for free or at a loss
“We are equals” doesn’t mean be overfamiliar or think everyone wants to be your friend, it means respectful professional boundaries, which /also/ means treating your faves as flawed humans with needs rather than as deities.
Then update your website and make sure your social media is consistent and has your name in it, get a new email address and bam you’re a pro. Welcome to the party, can I grab you a drink
Something I learned quick in this industry is almost no one is going to look you up to check your pub creds before interacting lmao, almost EVERYONE is going to assume you’re the real deal right away. Even if you mostly do zines/have less than 1k Twitter followers/no Wikipedia.
You will get the farthest in this industry by being decent, authentic, considerate, and excited. Anyway that is my off the cuff uncle comics rant, have a lovely Halloween and rest of your weekend and then make some comics.
Although as a word of warning, as a 20 year old or whatever i took this a little far and did things like not bring my portfolio to places to look like I didn’t “need” to and don’t do that lmao don’t be weird like me.
Also, probably the only thing folks clock amateurs on is...things like...if you’re being vague OR talking yourself up a lot. “I do work on Webtoon” suffices.

“Umm I have like..I do a webcomic“ or “I run a franchise property with 10k followers“ might get you made.
