Four matches without VVD. What have we learned? These are the things I've observed we are missing
1) We aren't clearing danger as effectively as before. Opponents are finding it much easier to play in our third via direct play and second balls
2) The defensive line is deeper which has affected the gegenpress. Pitch not being squeezed and too big a distance between front and back. MF not backing up the forwards who are easily bypassed
3) Problems in buildup #1: we are missing VVD's under-rated long passing and ability to launch dangerous attacks against low-block defences
4) Problems in buildup #2: the MF are dropping too deep to take 5 yard passes off the centre backs which is making it easier to stifle our attacks
5) We have virtually no threat on attacking set plays any more
On the plus side, we have 4 wins from 4 despite having no obvious identity. It's nice to be able to grind out wins thanks to moments of brilliance from world class attackers and have genuine attacking depth
Is it sustainable? Quite possibly. We're currently generating 2.4 XG per game which is the 3rd best in Europe after Bayern and PSG. And we're not particularly running hot in attack either.
And at some point we'll start saving more of the oppositions shots on target

There's an age old philosophical debate in football about the importance of players vs systems. For the first time in decades, #LFC might be in a position to argue its all about the players
