I am going to take some time away from my shitposting to talk about something that is very important to me: today, Halloween, marks the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The US Justice Department estimates that 1,300,000 women and 835,000 men are victims of physical violence by a partner every YEAR. Every 9 seconds, a woman in the US is assaulted by a current or ex-significant other.
I personally have two family members (that I know of, there could be more) who were victims of domestic violence. One survived, and one, unfortunately, did not.
My cousin Andrea lost her life at the young age of 19 after her ex-boyfriend strangled her to death. My aunt Mary was almost killed after her boyfriend shot her in the face and then turned the gun on himself.
My aunt Patty helped to create “Andrea’s Law”, a registry for murderers in Illinois, after Andrea’s killer served just 12 years for her murder.
My aunt Mary has had a difficult time adjusting after the incident. She had to undergo multiple facial reconstruction surgeries, and still suffers from hearing and memory loss as a result of being shot in the face. She will never be the same.
The point of this thread, I guess, is to show other victims that you are not alone. Being abused by someone you love is not shameful, and it is NOT your fault.
Please reach out if you are being abused. Please do not be embarrassed because it is not your fault. Please do something before you are no longer able to do it. Your life matters and you are loved.
And please, if you ever need someone to talk to but are afraid of reaching out to the hotline, talk to me. Call me. Text me. I will always be here for you.
