It flew under the radar for many but Tencents press conference this week, announcing their new IP 'cultural & creative' engine is absolutely worth paying attention to.

They'll be combining the efforts of Reading Media, Tencent Pictures & Xinli Media.

The big race in the world of entertainment is laser focused on IP - creating it, developing it, disseminating it & monetising the shit out of it.

To do this, you need an 'IP engine', resource coordination & clear but comprehensive division of labor. https://twitter.com/ballmatthew/status/1319345093736738816?s=20

Tencent Pictures & Xinli Media are production houses with many tentacles, capable of turning IP mined from Reading Media into blockbuster films, TV series, animations and more.

To put it into perspective - imagine if Wattpad partnered with Disney and EA games to combine their IP, resources & platforms to focus on birthing new worlds, regularly, for the next 5-10 years.

Yeah, that.

And this is important because IP is not necessarily region-specific. Recently, THR report that China is on course to overtake Hollywood as the largest entertainment market in the world. Meaning that a lot of this IP will make its way to our shores.

They kicked off the conference announcing 56 works in one go. That's...a lot.

Certainly one to watch as we start to see the changing landscape of blurred-boundaries IP-based entertainment continue to grow.
