We assess whether five dominant approaches to planetary stewardship and earth system governance are apt at realizing a pro-poor vision of justice and what alternative approaches might be needed. #EarthSystemGovernance #PlanetaryJustice 2/n
The five approach we assess are market liberal, bioenvironmentalist, ecomodernist, institutionalist, and social green (for this we build on the important work by @JennClapp and @PeterDauvergne). 3/n
In sum, our assessment of each of these five approaches suggests that none adequately addresses or prioritizes the pursuit of pro-poor planetary justice, even though both institutionalists and social greens address important aspects of the transformative reforms needed. 4/n
Planetary stewardship requires planetary justice. We need better theoretical approaches & differently focused empirical studies to put the needs of the poor first in analyzing & advocating for effective governance responses to planetary ecological crises. #ClimateCrisis 5/n
Inspired by Gandhi's Talisman, we argue that this requires powerful state and non-state actors across all scales of governance to abide by three tenets of pro-poor planetary justice. 6/n
We propose three tenets of pro-poor PJ:

1. That the poor and marginalized majority shall not be made worse off
2. That the lot of the poor must improve
3. That the poor be recognized as legitimate participants in decisions about planetary stewardship 7/n

What would be some of the practical elements of a pro-poor strategy in planetary stewardship and earth system governance? We sketch five possible ways forward. 8/n
Planetary justice (a system designed to secure the integrity of the planetary system & universal protection of basic human dignity for all people) requires prioritizing poor people's interests within planetary stewardship. It requires addressing complex allocation challenges. 9/n
We are thankful to the participants in the Planetary Justice Task Force of the @ESG_Project at the 2019 Earth System Governance (ESG) Conference in #Oaxaca, which brought the authors together. We hope this Perspective piece helps foster engaged debates & new scholarship on PJ.10/n
