How to talk about abortion, reproductive rights & reproductive justice in a gender-inclusive way: a thread. #HealingIntersections #Abortion #AbortionRights #ReproductiveRights
Abortion & reproductive rights are not a single gender issue so we shouldn’t treat them as such. It’s not just about cisgender women! #CisgenderIsNotASlur
When reproductive rights are threatened or rolled back the bodily autonomy of everyone with a uterus* is impacted. #ReproductiveRights #ReproductiveJustice
That includes #Transgender men, as well as some #NonBinary, #Agender, #GenderNonConforming & #Intersex people. Unless the topic is centered solely on cisgender women (or another specific demographic) use gender-inclusive language.
Instead of “a woman’s right to choose” use ”abortion is a human right.”

Instead of “abortion is a woman’s choice,” use “abortion is a person’s choice.”

Instead of “a pregnant woman” use “a pregnant person.”

#AbortionIsHealthcare
If you are specifically talking about people with uteruses, instead of “women” use “people with uteruses” or “women & other people with uteruses.*”
*Note that not all people who are trans, agender, gender non-conforming or intersex are comfortable with traditional medical or societal names for their bodies & parts. Proceed with caution, respect & awareness.
If you need to reference a person’s body or body parts (think medical or intimate settings) ask people in private about what words they want you to use.
We hope this guide is helpful as you continue the conversation about #Abortion, #ReproductiveRights & #ReproductiveJustice. Remember that language is a living thing! It changes over time & in different groups. #HealingIntersections
