Zygotes and fetuses perform the 7 functions of life, a thread: https://twitter.com/malihaaamirr/status/1321149595779551234
1) responsiveness to environment:
During prenatal procedures, fetuses are able to sense the surrounding environment. It has also been proven that newborns are able to recognize their mother's voice st birth due to hearing it while in utero.
2) growth and change:
There are various levels of cells: toti-, pluri-, multi-, & nullipotent cells. The zygote begins as totipotent cells which are highly divisive. They mature within a few days to pluripotent cells. They then start to specialize to become various cell types.
3) ability to reproduce:
At sexual maturity, a human is able to reproduce. However in the multicellular level, each cell in the zygote/fetus is able to undergo mitosis, ie cellular reproduction.
4) have a metabolism and breathe:
The zygote/fetus gains oxygen and nutrients from the mother's blood supply. Though it cannot breathe due to its fluid-filled environment, it still performs cellular respiration, ie living metabolism.
5) maintains homeostasis:
Fetuses are able to intake nutrients through the mother's blood supply and get rid of wastes the same way. Ultimately, nutrients enter the zygote/fetus' body via the mother's nutrient intake.
6) being made of cells:
The zygote/fetus are made of cells.
7) passes traits to offspring:
Once humans reach sexual maturity, they are able to pass their genome onto offspring. Until then, they are developing the maturity to do so. In essence, every human has the capability to pass traits to offspring by virtue of having a genome.
