being on the cag has absolutely benefited my life, because it has taught me to accept that some folks just play magic in ways i find absolutely appalling, and that's totally ok. that's why i want to propose a different way to look at edh decks when it comes to finding opponents.
instead of some undefinable power level number that no one is consistent on, let's judge decks by player motivation. do you want highly interactive play, or do you want to have build your battlecruiser and compare it to mine?
are you looking for a game where you absolutely must be engaged with the cards at all times and all turns, or a game where you can kick back, chat, and tag out till it comes back to you?
a lot of commander's challenges come from player motivation. if you gave me and reid duke the same deck, with a vintage level land base and the strongest cards imaginable, i'd still durdle and fuck around while he goes for the quick and fast kill
as i like to say, i play the most powerful cards in the least optimal ways possible, because my motivation is a fun couple of hours with my pals and the game is secondary. i'd be deeply mismatched against folks who want to show off their skill and prowess, and neither'd have fun.
you don't need to pigeonhole yourself either. your motivations can change from game to game, even if the deck is identical. a hammer can bash a skull as easily as it can bash a nail, after all.
but next time you're looking for a group, don't ask about power levels. just ask what kind of game people want to play, and if it matches your speed, rock on.
