1/ So the vaccines are coming. Barring unexpected safety issues (ALWAYS POSSIBLE) I'd guess approvals could come before Christmas. BUT, you're not getting it anytime soon. Then some really hard issues present. Production, distribution and selling it to the public.
2/ It's increasingly looking like it will require 2 jabs and organizing this will be tough. There have been some fairly uncomfortable side effects in people as different dosages have been tried. If, as some in the trials have experienced, people get fever and lethargy for
3/ a day or so it's going to be very difficult to get them back for the second shot. From data I've seen there will be more side effects than people are used to.
Good communication prior to vaccination is needed. People have to know what to expect, to be prepared for this.
4/ Distribution is the next issue, specific storage and transportation are required for different types of vaccines. mRNA vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer etc.) will require subzero storage and transportation, while viral vector vaccines (JJ, Sanofi etc.) need refrigerated storage
5/ and transport. All are challenging, especially for the mRNA vaccines, but not insurmountable. Cold chain capacity is being increased worldwide.
Production:
We have never tried to vaccinate a high percentage of the world's population in a short time.
6/ Many vaccines are already in production, ahead of approval, but the world has production capacity limits that cannot be increased quickly. This will be the biggest obstacle to a quick rollout.
7/ We also have to ENSURE EQUITABLE access to the vaccines for every country on Earth. COVAX, convened by CEPI GAVI and WHO, will play a very important role in this. It should be noted that the US has chosen not to be part of this initiative. This could change after January 20.
8/ Some say the speed of development has been a miracle but it hasn't.
It's been the ceaseless dedication and work of the most brilliant women and men working in the scientific and medical fields for the true betterment of the world.
9/ Effective and safe vaccines ARE the only way out of the pandemic without MANY more deaths. Bearing in mind no safety milestones have been met yet and efficacy must meet a minimum of 50% for approval (70% or up for the first gen would be a home run)
when can YOU get vaccinated?
10/ Good question. With limited supplies at first most access plans are calling for high risk groups to get the first shots. HCW, first responders, the elderly and people with underlying conditions. This will filter down through the population as supplies increase.
11/ I am *hopeful* that by sometime next summer or fall vaccine clinics will be open to almost everyone. This would depend on no adverse incidents as we get closer to the approval process of course.
After you are vaccinated you will still practice social distancing and masking
12/ for quite a while as we SLOWLY return to a "normal".
If the timeline seems long to you, remember: in March it was unimaginable we could be at this point in mere months.
13/ I believe strongly in the regulators in Canada and will have no hesitation recommending any vaccine(s) they approve.
14/ There is no truth to the rumour that Pizza Hut will be a clinic location and use the slogan "Jab at The Hut".
🧛‍♀️
Well, that 70% home run seems to be low. Unreal.
