It's two weeks to Election Day, and there are dozens of important races and ballots across the nation to reduce mass incarceration and advance racial justice. In an exercise of tremendous self restraint, I wanted to share my top 5 races/ballots taking place in two weeks. (1/7)
On the top of my list is Oklahoma, which has the highest incarceration rate in the WORLD. We have a ballot initiative to take on the state's infamous habitual offender law. Thousands of people will be helped if it passes. This is the most important ballot initiative of 2020 (2/7)
Second is the Maricopa County District Attorney race. The challenger, Julie Gunnigle, has committed to reducing incarceration by 25% if she wins. The incumbent wants to maintain the status quo, which will keep Arizona as one of the highest incarceration states in the nation (3/7)
Third, Oregon is set to vote on a historic ballot that would decriminalize drug possession in the state. Not only would this end thousands of arrests, but it would also serve as a model for how to genuinely begin to end the racist War on Drugs. Thank you @DrugPolicyOrg! (4/7)
Fourth is the Los Angeles DA race. This is a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party, featuring an incumbent who wants more of the same against a challenger who's running on a decarceration platform. George Gascon is poised to bring audacious reforms to LA should he win (5/7)
Finally, 4 states will vote on marijuana legalization, w/ NJ being the top prize b/c of the number of arrests it will prevent & the domino effect on rest of East Coast. Now let's make sure that legalization advances racial justice, not just bankrolls the cannabis industry (6/7)
There are many other important races and ballots, particularly in California, but if I had to choose the top 5, they would be the above. Mass incarceration is a decentralized web of injustices, and to end this crisis we have to work state by state, county by county. Let's get 'em
