I was honoured to participate in @twowheelview 's Shift Into Winter event this week, talking about the joys of winter riding in Canada. The event was recorded and will be shared soon, but in the meantime I was inspired to post my Top Ten Reasons to Bike in Toronto This Winter:
10) Your gym is closed.
9) The TTC isn't enforcing mask-wearing
8) Social distancing is easy on a bike!
7) Glide right past traffic jams...
6) Free parking right outside your destination.
5) Multi-use trails are virtually empty! Enjoy the feeling of wilderness on the Don River Trail, the Kay Gardner Beltline Trail, and other car-free paths in our city.
4) Commuting to work? You have the flexibility to leave when you want, not when the bus is scheduled. No subway delays or accident snarl-ups will slow you down, so your commute time is predictable and consistent.
3) Gas engines are less efficient in the winter ( https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/sites/www.nrcan.gc.ca/files/oee/pdf/transportation/fuel-efficient-technologies/autosmart_factsheet_3_e.pdf), so they pollute even more than in warm weather.
2) Impress your friends and neighbours with your ruggedness! You don't have to tell them it's no harder than skiing or skating...
And the #1 reason to go #winterbiking in Toronto? It's really fun! Go #VikingBiking!!
