8 Q's I recommend newsrooms ask themselves before starting a newsletter. A thread. #newsletter
1. Is this the best channel for this content? Starting newsletters for the sake of starting one and not considering other channels/platforms is a no-no.
2. Why this content? Are you doing this because everyone else is or because you can bring a unique take to this issue/topic? For my local peeps, focus on what you do best - local reporting!
3. What is the goal? And please do not say Traffic. Consider engagement, loyalty, retention, developing other audiences besides your core base, and yes even subscription conversions.
4. Is there a revenue play here? Start thinking more about sponsorships packages that include newsletters.
5. Who are you targeting? And be specific! Where do they shop, what do they eat, what podcasts do they listen to, what publications do they subscribe to, where do they live, how much do they make, are they dog people or cat people?
6. Do we have the resources to make this happen? Do we have the people, time, and workflows in place for it to be successful? Aim to be more collaborative and work across teams and departments.
7. When will you send it? Consider send days and times that work for your audience and what you can commit to on a consistent basis.
8. Is this short-term or long-term and what's the plan for converting subscribers into other content, products, etc when you hit the end of the road? You need to ask yourself this BEFORE you launch, not when open and click rates start declining.
