i’ve been researching bob gibson and the celebration he got from white media members last week compared to the way he was viewed when he was a player are on two completely different levels. i mean, duh? but hear me out.
he was viewed as aggressive and militant while Black players who smiled more (banks, minoso were named specifically) or were quieter (aaron) were viewed more favorably.
i’ve reached the “what are you gonna do with all of this information?” part of the process, but i’m gonna try not to share too much.
audrey weaver began her column ‘jackie still tops here’ with “just when i had a nice, non-racial column all set to go, whitey jarred it right out of the typewriter with a bang.”
she was defending Black baseball players’ right to call out the league on their BS. she was fed up.

but my goodness what a line. i could spend hours (and do) reading sports articles from Black historical newspapers. those writers’ pens were just sick.
