Look, I understand the business. I get it. Beth Leavel understands the business & has given the film her blessing, just as long as the message of The Prom gets out there. So yeah, I can be the bigger person too.
The more people hear and truly understand Unruly Heart, the better.

But it's hard not to feel disappointed by a movie that didn't bother casting a gay man in the iconic role of Barry Glickman.

Barry is an iconic, important role - significant representation for gay men. Brooks plays that knife edge brilliantly.

I really wanted to remain open-minded about this movie - fully understanding that it's a different thing from the Broadway show and I can enjoy both.

My fellow Unruly Hearts, I have seen the @promnetflix movie - with my babe @writetherestfic - and I am delighted to report that I really enjoyed it. The musical's heart and message are worth fighting for, and that made it through to the film in a way that made me so so happy.
It's not perfect. Of course it isn't. There's so much about the OBC I miss - and no, I don't actually mean Ms. Leavel lol. I respect what Meryl does here tbh; she is, in fact, so very fucking good at what she does that I am more than happy to stan her Dee Dee Allen too!
I miss Brooks Ashmanskas with the fire of a thousand suns. I was surprised by just how much I missed Christopher Sieber & his goofily endearing cornball energy - does it make sense if I say his Trent radiates chaotic good energy vs Rannells who is more chaotic neutral/evil? Lol
But I LOVED some of the additions - that fucking motel scene 
, Tracey Ullman, depth for Kerry Washington's character. Not all of it feels perfectly placed, because the book of the musical was pretty tight. But I appreciated having more layers & backstory in there.

I wonder what it's like to watch the film for someone who isn't (way too) overly familiar with the Broadway show. Do the narrative beats land in the same way? I do feel that Emma and Barry and their relationship don't have the same wonderful weight as they do in the stage show.
More thoughts to come later, maybe. But I'm glad that this show I love so dearly is going out into the world and I hope it changes lives and hearts and minds the way the Broadway show did. It's not what I fell in love with, and that's okay. I can love this too, in its own way.
